Winnes on a famine in certain districts (Tamshui).

Report on the work of the mission carried on at Amoy. Written by Lechler in English with a list of missionaries working at Amoy in 1857. Also some remarks on the capture of Amoy by the "insurgents" in 1853 (p.4).

Lechler on his stay in Amoy. He mentions the Scottish missionary Burns "who never baptized...". For burns see also No. 11 p. 38, where it is described how Burns came to preach at Pechui ya. Account of life and missionary work in Amoy 1853- 1857.

Winnes mentions the Hakkas being only a small part of the Hongkong inhabitants and mainly working as servants, stone masons, street workers and carriers.

Lechler, back in Hongkong, on a Mission Hostel, which will be funded by the German Women's Association in Berlin and is meant to house the missionaries of the Berlin, the Barmen and the Basel Missions.

Winnes now has begun a school with his pupils drawn mainly from Lilong and lives with them in a rented house in the East End of Hongkong.

A report on Lechler's co worker Tshong hin, by Lechler. Tshong hin on his journey to the inland encounters the rebels who come "ordered by God". This makes people confuse all Christians with the rebels.

Lechler stresses the difference between his Christians and the former members of Guetzlaff's Chinese Union. To prove this he tells of the conversion of Afuk and his father in Lilong and the story of the teacher Lai Thai jin.

H. Goecking of the Berlin Mission gives his opinion on the Chinese Chin ko sin sang and Thai fung, both at the time working for the Berlin Mission in Hongkong (and apparently on a list of Chinese assistants to be trained at Basel?).

Lechler on p. 4 describes the conversion of several families from Tungfo, who had been brought to Sau ki wan by Hinfuk, who was stationed there by Mr. Lobscheid of the Barmen Mission. He also mentions that Tshong hin is on his way back to Tschong lok.
