In his half yearly report, E. Gohl complains of the difficulties in placing catechists, of Hongkong being a rather expensive and unhealthy place to live, and of the young missionaries not being motivated to write their reports because there is no personal relation with members of the committee.

Gohl regrets the apparent impossibility of holding a synod, a fact furthering the plans of Pastor Tscnung and his followers to found a mission independent of the Basel Mission. He also complains distrust and lack of unity amongst the missionaries. See also Nos. 308+309 on the independent church
