He also proposes Asiaman as the second Akim station on the grounds that - providing the need for a health station is not decisive - it is nearer the coast and Akwapim, food etc. is cheaper, it is on a trade route (unlike Begoro) and it is near the all Gyadam people. Though on the other hand there are more villages near Begoro than Asiaman and there may be lack of water at Asiaman at some times. In connection with the school problem he suggests the school is a hothouse plant reared before its time in Akim. The only solution is more weighty European missionary presence.

                <text>An appreciation of the situation in Akim following the two attempts by Haas to collect more pupils for the school. Much of the discussion is taken up with detailed reactions to Akropong decisions over transfers and the interpretation of Basel Committee decisions. The general line of policy suggested, however, is that the Kibi School, in view of the general lack of success in recruiting more pupils, should be scaled down until it can be handed over to a catechist and a teacher - claiming a missionary's time only in that he would be the overseer. This would enable one missionary to devote himself to the community and station business, leaving one free for preaching journeys. These they considered the growth-point, since on Haas' recent journeys the people who were responsive to the appeal for pupils were commoner heads of families - chiefs and elders were universally hostile. To enable preaching journeys and the promotion of outstations to be carried on energetically they suggest 4 or 5 missionaries at the one (Kibi) station. If they found more stations it will simply mean that more than one missionary remains tied to the stations' administration. This increase would involve an increase in catechists - without a catechist 'a missionary has neither entry to the families, nor is he understood'. There is also the point that they have to calculate that there will be a lot of sickness they cite the preceding year in which Haas was tied to the school, Kromer to building, and Lodholz was almost constantly ill and twice needing to go to Akwapim for convalescence - it was a direct result of the latter that Asiakwa for example, was so little visited. There is also a plan for move financial support for travelling – Haas’ last circular journey in Akim cost him one pair of boots, two of shoes, let alone the clothing destroyed.

(b) part of the trouble was the lack of women – but except in Begoro that is the case all over Akim. Unlike 'Akwapim women are given in marriage invariably in a transaction with monetary aspects - therefore the wealth have as many wives as they want, and the poor (who are much poorer than in Akwapim) do without. (c) beyond that, one of the troubles was that many conversions happened because the motives were those of the flesh - it was a new thing and therefore people wanted to join it. (d) several mission agents were stumbling blocks (e) though Kukurantumi has not many villages near it (Asante numbers them at 3), neither has any other Akim town except Kibi, and Kukurantumi has the advantage of being a route centre for merchants from all sorts of directions. The school is now 14 pupils strong.  In a subscript Widmann interprets point (d) above in terms of the Missionaries Burckhardt, Chr. Asante and Strömberg who was not a good example in all respects.

Haas, who was alone on the station, is frequently interrupted for medicine, and knows that often there is no urgency about the matter, put the man off - only to hear some time later that the slave had been 'thrown' into the bush. Haas struggled to get to him in time, but though he was still alive when he was found, he died about an hour later. Haas was full of remorse and the next day (Sunday) in the Street Preaching in Kibi called the 'throwing' of slaves into the bush a murderous custom for which they would all - the Okyenhene included by name - receive their pay in due course. (In the first part of the letter he thanks the Basel Committee for finding him a wife).

                <text>They have be having a somewhat better response to invitations to send boys to the school - 2 have been sent from Apapame and after Lodholz’ tour of western Akim, 2 more were sent (home towns not specified) and a third came later from Kwaman. However, there is also a definite movement among potential pupils to find their own way to school and set aside the hindrances imposed by the elders. In the last quarter they had received boys from Apapam, Date-Ntem, Abomosu, Kwaben, 7 in number, all fleeing to them without permission. They cannot on the station guarantee to keep such boys against all the manouevres of their families, and they have a rule never to buy such a boy free or out of a debt. But they themselves insist on repayment of the money spent on feeding such pupils if the attempt is made eventually to take them away, and this acts as a deterrent. They depend on the boys' own determination to stay, of course, and of this seven 2 have run away again, and the others have needed to be warned and encouraged.
