                <text>The station is called the white-man's village by the Kibi people. During 1863 catechist Joseph Ofei had to be excluded for immorality. They have had little time for preaching journeys beyond the immediate surroundings of Kibi but have preached regularly in Kibi especially when the people have assembled from distant places. He feels the people must sooner or later respond to the proclamation of the non-existence-of fetishes and the deceitfulness of the priests. In 1863 a fetish priest in Kibi was either killed or else committed suicide after poisoning 7 people. And another advised a wealthy man that he was ill because someone envied his fine farm - if he were to have the best fruits from the farms strewn at the entrance of the village they would know who the envious one was because it would be he who stole them. The fetish priest was himself caught stealing the fruits. Reporting on the community - Jakobo goes on his quiet way but the elder Abraham is concerned only with material things, though it is true that he has given up drinking since he became a Christian. The two ex-Gyadam pupils had to be excluded from the Catechists' Seminary because of immorality, and Georg Pabi of Kukurantumi left the Seminary because he found the discipline too hard. However, the first Kibi man has been baptised and 6 youths baptised in Kukurantumi at the beginning of the year are a shining example. There are 10 Kibi catechumens over whom Eisenschmid expresses anxiety.

                <text>In Kibi school numbers are relatively stable at 15, boys whom the King and elders ‘gave’ to the school. They attend fairly regularly and many of them would like to live on the station. Some seem to be really gaining something from baptismal instruction. In Kukurantumi the numbers vary between the six boys who are baptised and live with the catechist to about 17. The children said at one point in the year that no more children would go to the school unless a white man came to live in Kukurantumi (the missionaries agree that Catechist Burkhardt is not satisfactory and that he has not won the confidence of people for scholars).

                <text>Reporting a palaver in the second half of July. About 80 people brought as embassy from the Governor and 3 different Fante kings. Among them were 2 locally born officers, and a local preacher of the Methodist Church in Anomabu called Gyade. For the first few meetings of the palaver the missionaries were present, later they were not requested to attend by the Okyenhene, and so did not, but heard what transpired. Kromer refused to translate a letter from the Government when there was an official interpreter there. The Governor sent a letter which threatened Abuakwa with withdrawal of English protection if peace was not concluded with Kotoku. Ata's initial reaction was protest - and then the statement that he would put the matter in the lands of the –Government to arbitrate. The embassy said that was not something they were interested in - they wanted to know if it was peace or war with Kotoku, and gave Ata 4 days to think it over. Asase spoke in a very coarse and hostile way, and the embassy protested that if he were not silenced they would leave without waiting for an answer whereon the king and his elders apologised for him. In the end the king acceded to all the demands made on him, and swore loyalty to the English by the Thursday god. In many ways the embassy seem to have linked themselves to the mission - Gyade preached in the chapel, and large numbers of the Fante came to Sunday morning service and the Sunday night street preaching, which was held under the very tree where 7 Asantes had been executed, and where there skulls were currently lodged. Kromer also seems to have tried to do his bit to emphasise what he saw as the threat implied by the embassy of a Fante attack advising elders with whom he had conversation that if the embassy was rebuffed then Kibi would be in ruins in 14 days.

                <text>Reflects on his having been two years in Africa – his two comrades who journeyed from Basel with him both having died. Among the Kibi catechumens is a man born a house-slave who himself now owns two slaves. He was wounded in the shoulder - a fight early in the year, the missionaries dressed the wound and after conversations he became a catechumen. Eisenschmid is however, hopeful rather than sure of his faith, since he is going to have to give up his two slaves. More particulars about Kukurantumi - the fetish priest has threatened the Christians with death from the fetish. When the chief threateded to send no more children to the school unless a white man came to live in Kukurantumi, Eisenschmid spoke to him about the fact that he was answerable to God for what he did. He remarks that a horse would be very useful in Kibi for travelling around the Akim villages – there would be fodder for it, and since they apparently survive in Asante, why not in Akim? Atta sometimes visits the station in Kibi riding upon one of his men’s shoulders. A Widmann visit to Akim included a trip to Asiakwa where the chief still wants to have a school.

The Asiakwa chief named Diedu is not loved by the Okyenhene whom he often openly accuses. His town and the villages under it are more open to the mission than others. Diedu is far above Atta in his knowledge. He is working with only 2 carpenters, 5 sawyers and 2 masons, because most of the foreign workmen are still on the coast waiting to see the outcome of the British expedition of 1400 European soldiers and 1000 locals against Asante. They are at present stationary because of the rain, with one camp of huts built in Swedru. In Kukurantumi the mission stood in bad enough odour at one stage for a new path to be cut to enable people to go to Akropong without passing by the mission station. He then made her his wife, with the concurrence of the missionaries, since his proper wife had returned to Osu, and had let him know that she was living with another man. After about 6 months she returned, however, and the husband took her up again apparently on the grounds that she had showed her devotion by travelling so far into the interior to come to him. Mader in aftermath of this situation tried to get the husband hand to slave over to missionary Kromer as a servant, but Atitsogbe proposed instead that in four years the woman should be set quite free, but should in the meantime serve him and his wife - as strangers in Kibi they needed a maidservant.                 <text>Kromer has had a wife on the station since early in the year - she was seriously ill at first, but otherwise they have been in good health with fevers, but not seriously. Concerning Catechist Asante Eisenschmid writes that ‘he has experienced the power of Christ in his heart' - while Burckhardt does not really seek God. Eisenschmid’s picture of their impact is gloomy - the response is if anything less – ‘deep thinking is not the concern of the local people, they are too much embedded in their beliefs about fetishes and consider that with a few eggs or a hen everything can be settled to their advantage'. The Okyenhene is further sunk in drunkenness, and holds himself more distant than he did before - indeed be has tried to interfere in a savage way, though these have been mitigated by the elders who were usually on the side of the mission, like to have them living in Kibi, and made up damages or appealed the missionaries to forget what had happened. Life in Kibi is constant lies and deceit and quarrels and brawls. The annual festival was held on Christmas Day, and passed off reasonably on that day, but the next day Kibi people quarrelled with the people of two other villages and they had many wounded to attend to in the evening. They have preached regularly in Kibi and the surrounding villages, visited Kukurantumi many times, Asinkwa a few times, and Begoro at least once. Outside Kibi the doors are open. A particularly heavy rainy season has made travelling very difficult for much of the year. The Kibi community stands at 39 - they have baptised 11 during the course of the year, about half from the school, 2 were children, of the rest 7 were from Akim, 1 from Accra, and one an Akropong servant-girl of Kromer's. Several people moved away from Kibi, especially those who had been involved in the building, including an elder called Abraham, an Accra carpenter. Though the Christians have not been perfect (avarice is mentioned especially as a problem), obviously Eisenschmid is fairly at peace with them. Most have a spiritual life, and their child-like contributions at the weekly prayer meeting please the missionaries. Kukurantumi is in a state of crisis - little further is said other than that the Chriatian youths of Kukurantumi want to come to Kibi There is a project for Kromer to move when Christaller comes to Kibi.

                <text>Kukurantumi school had to be closed when Burckhardt was brought to Kibi to be given special supervision. He had been trying to teach with heavy punishments what he hardly knew himself, being little gifted, and having lost much of the knowledge with which he had left the Seminary. This has had a favourable result for the Kibi school which was increased by 6 pupils to 20. The Kibi school marches out now in shirt and trousers made by Frau Kromer. He continues to give the Kibi school a good report, in this subject they are in no way behind an elementary school in Europe. They have troubles with arithmetic however, with the pupils attending regularly and having a real desire to learn, and Chr. Asante getting an excellent report as a man who loves his pupils, works to increase his knowledge and has an inner consistency about him. Biblical knowledge is taken up with great enthusiasm by the boys; and singing - often when heathen singing is to be heard in Kibi at night, the boys can be heard singing the hymns they know. 500 coffee trees have been put into the plantation.

                <text>He reckons to have seen a much greater interest in the content of their teaching evidencing: A visit to Asiakwa where the grey-haired elders asked questions about the meaning of points in his preaching - and the younger elders professed to be largely in agreement (though this was all in connection with their continued pressure for a teacher). The chief of the three Apedua villages has asked for a teacher (though Kromer talks about the people and their loyalty to the fetishes in a way which does not suggest much general pressure there). In the small hamlets they are often now visited by individuals who either want to ask them questions about their religious belief or express their agreement with and liking for sermons which they have heard. In commenting on Kukurantumi Kromer writes that the chief and people have returned to their service of the fetishes, though with no great enthusiasm.
