Also he seized an Accra man working on the station for debt, and only after much pressure from the mission accepted repayment from the man from gifts to him from the missionaries to get him out of his difficulties. He refused to accept an arrangement whereby the man worked for the missionaries and paid a regular sum to the king. At the outbreak of the Asante war-scare an Asante who had left his country several years before and was now Strömberg’s servant had been put in the block. The object of his journey was to get masons and sawyers. He was only able to employ one of each, however. 14th March - set out from Odumase (with Zimmermann), reaching the first Akim farms after 8 hours (course roughly NNW). He describes the path as climbing a hill, and once the view had changed from that to the east over the plains to that to the NW over the hills covered with forest he could see smoke rising in several places marking spots where the Akims were making farms. The first night they spent in an Akim hunting and fishing settlement (By the Pompom, the Akim-Krobo boundary). 15th March - Sunday. 16th March - six hours march, now accompanied only by two carriers and a boy, to the hunter's huts called Aduntia. 17th Match - delayed by a thunderstorm, and bad sleep in the forest. 18th March - reached Begoro. Describing the journey generally, he reports that much of the way they travelled by the Bungkrum river, a tributary of the Pompom. The hunters' huts were numerous, and there must be many people in the forest at some times of year. The first 10 hours from the Krobo border was through thin forest, with little shade protection to the traveller. He was highly impressed with the farms around Begoro, writing that you see such a richness in vegetation usually only in alluvial plains like that of the Densu. Cases offered as occurring recently in Kibi: - A servant of Strömberg's who to employ he had to pay 5 dollars, and shortly after Strömberg was presented with the alternative of paying a further 20 dollar debt or seeing the man pawned. - 20 dollars had to be paid for a debt of the mason who assisted in the building of the second Kibi mission house. So argues that it is impossible to take on wage labour without first paying the debts of the people involved.It appears that inter al he had received instructions from Basel not to pay peoples' debts (this letter is a reply to one from Basel dated 14th March 1863). The Asante embassy was ordered to Accra by the Colonial Government, tried to escape on the way, but was captured. Two Accra men came to Kibi to take a hostage to Accra as surety of the King of Akim’s loyalty, and to inform him that no ammunition would be sent to him unless he sent an elder with the party to collect it. The Okyenhene agreed straight away to both demands, sending a daughter of one of his sisters as hostage. On the 16th April a messenger arrived with the news that a certain Asante tribe had marched to Kwahu in order to join the Kwahus in an attack on Akim. On hearing the news of the fighting at Akease (this came on the 19th April) the women were sent to Akwapim, and the men went into military order. The missionaries sent some of their valuables to Accra. There were 12 Asantes in the block in Kibi. The first Asante to be killed had been captured in Kukurantumi.
