He also remarks again on the fact that it is on the main trade route from Asante towards the eastern part of the Gold coast so that on average he has 4-5 Asantes listening to his preaching. This report is the source of the remark in the Heidenbote article - in an editorial passage - that the Asantes are trading in rice, shea butter, parrots and slaves. Concerning the influence of Islam, Strömberg says that Mohammedans had great influence over Agyeman of Gyadam in the recent war. Reasons - the higher cost of food and the lower value of gold, and the fact that in using gold dust for small sums (down to 1 1/2 d) there is bound to be loss. Mission work - they preach 4-5 times a week, and have regular morning and evening prayers. He has made journeys to 4 neighbouring villages. School is held regularly, and the Kukurantumi chief, whom Strömberg says in moral terms is the best chief he has met in Africa has sent three boys to the school, to see how they do - the singing pleases him very much. Description An account of the resource During Strömberg’s absence in Akropong he had to translate a letter aent from the Governor to King Atta for him. The chief of Asiakwa, which like the Gyadams, 65 years ago migrated from Asante but serves king Atta, has asked for a teacher. A paragraph about the 4 Gyadam Christians who had arrived in Akropong is written in stark Calvinist terms – these were chosen by God from among the Gyadamers, and God has put into them the wish for further training. Adultery is certainly punished, but it is also a fact that in the larger towns women tempt foreigners into adultery in order to have them accused. The preaching journey had the result that the Kibi people now know more clearly what his objectives are in going there - 'they have accepted a word for our teacher which indicates that they think school is a European custom rather like their fetish usages'. On the journey to Kibi he says the first village after Kukurantumi is Asafo - a pretty village with European style, houses with only one room. The people all out at farms they met only merchants - presumably in transit. After that Koko – again no-one in the village, over Aberewa Amforo, and through the Kibi farming hamlets, where he met a veteran carpenter who had worked with Brother Meischel. He describes in outline visiting in Kukurantumi trying to persuade nephews of an old lady to rebuild her house, coming across two young men with a copy of Barth's Bible Stories translated into Twi who were trying to work out what the pictures were. The Kukurantumi people had all left the town on account of a dispute with an unnamed Akwapim town which looked at one stage as if it were going to lead to war between the two towns. Atta drinks a lot - this is not approved by his people. Nevertheless he is well-disposed to the missionaries - he has asked Strömberg to tell him the difference between right and wrong, and has listened to two sermons on the subject. In Kukurantumi they have made little progress, two of the Gyadam Christians have had to be excluded, one from what sounds like a complete collapse of belief and practice, the other because of lack of penitence. Kromer apparently has no trained sawyers (people from Kukurantumi will not work in Kibi on account of the high cost of food), but has trained carpenters. The king has complained they do not visit him enough. An elder has said to Kromer that he understands he will not be crucified when he dies because Jesus has been crucified on account of his (the elder's) wickedness.
