According to him the main cause of the present war (which Atta declared in January of 1860) was a Gyadam elder who had fled to Kibi, and then wanted his family to come to him. This would have been a substantial segment of the population of Gyadam, and the messengers set by Atta to Gyadam over this matter were chased away- hence the war. The attempt by the colonial goyernment to arbitrate between the two kings was carried on by an officer named Cochrane, who seems to have been quite powerless. He attemted to arrange a meeting between them at Osino. Atta did not attend. Strömberg went with the Gyadam contingent and according to his own testimony was able to play no little part in keeping the stay of the Gyadam people in Osino peacefully. He slept the night with the Gyadam people, even thought they were expecting an attack from the Kibi army. The first skirmish tool place at the foot of the mission hill at Gyadam on March 19th. The Kibi army was beaten back, and Osino evacuated. The mission’s relations with Cochrane do not seem to have been very close. They asked him to get a guarantee from Kibi that mission property in Gyadam would be respected, but he could get no answer on this point from Atta. He in turned offered them some soldiers, but this was refused at this stage. Strömberg claims that missionary influence over the Agyeman is visible in this situation. (i) Two prisoners of war were just sent back to Kibi, (ii) he had the wounds which one of them had suffered cared for (iii) when it was proposed by Cochrane that either each king should pay as surety 50 ounces gold or have members of each family drink fetish. Agyeman is said to have preferred the former, refusing the latter on the grounds of the missionaries teaching. (Strömberg visited him en route for Akropong. On the journey onwards from Nsutem Strömberg reports meeting of many Akim war-parties on the way to join the king). Agyeman’s decision to move was partly inspired by a fear of a surprise attack from Ashanti. The king’s message through the mission in extenso appears to have been that if the English government would “arrange” the dispute he would stay in Gyadam, but that they must move quickly because Atta’s strength is double to his own. The letter openly expresses the mission interest in the continuing existence of Gyadam, without which the station would have to be abandoned. A postscript is to the effect that Agyeman had attacked the Kibi forces. A Kibi attack has again been repulsed, and although Agyeman wanted to follow up their retreat, he was restrained because he did not want to attack them on their own territory, and also because the Okwamu people barred the way to him. He is also short of provisions and ammunition. The letter concludes with an account of the measures approved by the station conference at Akropong for the safety of the Gyadam missionaries. They are given full power at their own discretion if it becomes necessary to put themselves under Atta’s protection. Additional material in the manuscript includes the following: About 15 Gyadam women had been seized by the Kwahua en route for Swedru (they heard this on March 24th) 26th March – News came in that 12-15 people had been taken prisoner by Kibi forces on one of the Gyadam plantation villages. There is a more detail about the battle on 27th March also. One section of the Gyadam forces under Safohene Kwadjo Kokoroko was sent onto the Abomsu road to hinder the advance of the Abokrofo. The people from Mosease lay in the woods to the east of Gyadam. On the day when the Gyadam people left finally, one of the Christians came to bid farewell to the missionaries, and he was presented with a twi gospel for all the Christians, and promised to try to visit the Akropong station via Accra. About 12 foreigners had taken refuge on the mission station during the battle – people from Keta Accra Cape Coast, and Fante. The mission house near the town had been left unmolested for more than a fortnight by the soldierts of both sides. After sacking Gyadam, Atta took his forces to Moseamo and burnt it. Haas remarks that Moseamo was under the protection of the God Bosompra. A detachment was left in Gyadam under Diedu, Atta’s father in law. Atta went on to Asiakwa with the intention of attacking Agyeman again. The winding up of the station was difficult – people were hoping for plunder, and there was a rumour about that the missionaries had been given the Gyadam state treasure for safe-keeping. A Kibi prince, with Emanuel Gyekyi were sent with 40 soldiers to investigate this and were pressing. One Gyadam Christian went as servant with Missionary Kromer, who had a hard time protecting him. Another Gyadam Christian remained with the missionaries - he like Kromer's servant, had been bought out of slavery by Süss. 4 went away to Swedru with the rest of the Gyadam people. Soon after the evacuation of Gyadam some Akropong people journeying out of Asante brought the news that a great Asante army had been collected and was likely to make a surprise attack on Gyadam. Captain Cochrane was accompanied by 6 soldiers, an officer sent to ensure Agyeman's safe journey (Captain De Rouvaign, a Swiss from Canton Waadt) was accompanied by 20 In Tafo on the journey evacuating the station Haas dressed the wound of a Kukurantumi man who in gratitude gave him the key of his house so that he could sleep there while he stayed in Kukurantumi.
