Martin's box carrier was from one of the Sohai villages, a converted fetish priest aged 32 years, who since his conversion had been in Anum attending the school to learn to read. He was welcomed - in his absence the people had begun to believe that the fetish had killed him. Martin has tried to converse with him about his previous religion, and question him as to how he could live with his conscience when he practiced so much deception, but his reply is always that he believed that he was serving God. Martin thinks that he had been consciously trying for some time to do everything to find a favourable God, and had got into a lot of debt because of this (The conversion occurred in connection with the work of Teacher Tenkorang). When they preached in Sohai Martin told the people they were all sinners, with one way out, but at the end of his preaching all the people but one woman and two men commenced to play and dance and create a terrible noise (The ex-fetish priest was called Immanuel Obofoo, and he owned three houses). He speaks of coming onto the Salaga road just before reaching the village of Vakpo, from Botoku. In the last Vakpo village and the first Kpando village he speaks about being asked to bind up wounds. In Kpando itself they preached in the face of interruptions and arguments. They had to speak sternly to the king who was trying to prevent a woman from becoming a Christian – they threatened to report him to the German Regime - in the end the woman was allowed to go to Nkonya with them. Martin was disappointed with Kpando market - it was concerned with foodstuffs - the Mohammedans playing the leading role. They also had a sharp altercation with Mohammedans about the relative status of Mahomet and Christ - the Mohammedan quarter he places north of the market. In Ntwumuru the chief asked Martin if he had done right in accepting the German flag (which in another moment in the conversation he said had been forced upon him), and also wanted to know what the difference was between the Germans and the English. Martin writes that he explained the latter, but felt the former was not his problem and so did not comment. They preached on the Sunday in the three different sections of Ntwumuru town – the largest crowd being 200, though Martin feels they were mostly inspired by curiosity. At the Abo on the route to Peki there was a tree, used as a bridge which Martin ascribes tout court to the Mohammedans. He actually saw loads of merchandise being carried across. He was using Obofo as his interpreter in Krepe. His successor was middle-aged - Obese Kwasi. The bulk of the report is concerned with incidents between the Christians and the townspeople which are also outlined in Rösler’s Report (No. 137): - The chief was worried about the Christians' planting of atokol, a kind of millet which is planted in Salaga but only found growing wild near Anum usually. - The chiefs from the other quarters (Obese is said to have been from Apenkwa) were called Bomo (Amamforo) and Opoku (Ammoanna), - The blue baft had-part of at least – been bought by Christians from traders in Anum town. - The dogs were reckoned to have been brought back by Christians from Akwapim and Accra when returning from the Asante war. - Obese Kwasi had lived his whole time on the coast until his election as chief. - A deceased fetish priest-called Badu had worn blue baft - In the Sunday morning services they were saying prayers for the chief elders and the people. - The quarrel was really between the Christians and the elders - the king being silenced by a barrage of questions which led up to the futility of the prohibitions (he had himself kept dogs) and mutual assurances of good will. The confrontation between missionary and catechist and elders on the one side and chief and elders on the other took place in an atmosphere of tension, many elders and people shouting out that they would kill the dogs if they were not taken away. - When going to fetch water from the Volta (the Anum people were not letting them use their water sources, and they had told the Dodi people not him to let them get Volta water at Dodi), they went to the river by a side way through the farms of an Ada man who did not oppose them because he did not know about the business (The next day, however, they had to use water from the mission house cistern). In two skirmishes the leader of the rioters was a very rich man' from Amanforo called Nyako - The community from Boso, Kpalime and Tsate had brought water for the Anum community, and had arrived at the same time as a soldier and messenger from the English side of the Boundary Commission. These were sent to the chief and linguist of Amanforo. The German members of the Boundary Commission were visiting the Anum station and present when Martin first approached one of the English members (Hicks) and asked him for the intervention the English Government. (Hicks advice was apparently that the dogs should be sent to the protection of the DC at Akuse). When Martin sent a night messenger to Williams the ex-Akuse DC the same messenger was asked to survey his report to the German delegation too The situation was eventually pacified in a court held by Williams in Anum in which five leaders of the Anum heathens were bound over to keep the peace for a year on penalty of a £100 fine each. The Christians seem to have exercised a fair amount of discipline and self-control in the situation as Martin records it, though the arrival of the government messenger coincided with an explosive situation, and that because of this no real fighting broke out. Water pots were destroyed in numbers, but little else occurred. Martin makes clear that what he says is approximate - he has made enquiries, but sources do not always agree. There is no control over the sale of spirits in the German area. Indeed in some places it is used as a medium of exchange. In Kpando the Mohammedans trade in spirits. He met one who said the German-European was a good man - he let people buy spirits as and when they wanted to) and the Kpando catechist believes they drink it privately, too. Mohr gives some account of the production of palm wine, remarking that in the northern part of the district it is taken not so much from the oil palm as from the Adobe, Kube and Nkresia palms. Moderate drinking of palm-wine hurts one no more than moderate drinking of wine in Europe, though at great festivities palm-wine will be gathered for up to 14 days and mixed with pepper and meat - the resulting brew is very strong indeed. He knows of other local drinks: Honey beer from Salaga - very intoxicating. Atokosa, prepared from guinea-corn and presumably a hairy fruit, the mixture poured on water, allowed to simmer sweet when first made, but quickly ferments to a drink as intoxicating as palm wine. Awinsa, prepared from the cereal called Awi which is beaten in a mortar, the husks and later the other solid remains taken off in water, while the drink is boiled and later allowed to stand - only intoxicating in large quantities. A quite unintoxicating drink is prepared from yellow bananas. He also heard how to make rice beer from an old woman in Ntwumuru who had come from far into the interior. He and the two local pastors, Clerk and Hall, agree that there is nothing wrong with the local drinks - it is European spirits which ‘spoils' people. He has asked in Kpando how far into the interior spirits are carried. The reply was that you see Mosis and Yendi people with them. He expressed scepticism, and learned that they speak Hausa and broken Twi or Ewe. He asked about the money needed to buy the spirits, and learned that they are bartered for local products. He has heard it said that you cannot buy a slave except with spirits or powder. The spirits are not sent into the interior in bottles, but in large tins of 90% spirits which are then mixed one part with to 2 parts water. Two such tins constitute one load. He once saw a caravan of approximately 15 carriers with 30 such tins mistaking them for petroleum (paraffin, presumably). They were en route for Krakye, from Agome-Kpalime, and he met them when he was on the way from Konsu to Worawora. Giving examples of the effects of spirits on African life he writes that the Vakpo people are one of the worst affected tribes. In their capital Avhue there is scarcely a single house in good repair. Amoyaw, the chief, replied to Martin's advice about drinking that if Martin would stop 'European wine' coming, he would leave off drinking. He also cites a case of what appears to be death from alcohol poisoning in Anfoe, and lasting disability from drinking a bottle of spirits in consecutive swallows. Spirits in this area comes in tins from Keta (Keta is nearer than Lome and the spirits are cheaper). On Anfoe market spirits can be used as currency, a yam costing 1/- of one bottle schnapps. The town of Komfa (among the Dsemes west of Anfoe on the Volta) has 90-100 houses, but when he was last there half of them were falling down. The chief explained this by saying that everyone in the town was ill. Martin then reminded him that the year before he had found everyone drunk, and the chief agreed that this was really the problem and that whereas before there was plenty of cash in the town and that when he settled a case he was paid in money, now all the money is used for spirits, and he is paid in spirits. Offering a little information on local reactions to spirits Martin cites a Worawora elder who is on the side of the missionaries at least when they condemn spirits – Ampesa (He also cites hearing that Tutukple Kwadwo was protesting against the constant caravans of spirits passing through his country is when Mohr was in Adele in 1895). Families in Anum have been known to imprison hard drinking relatives because of the danger that such a person will bring the family into debt. A hard drinking chief has even been known to be destooled e.g. Begoro. Discussing spirits booths and arguing that from the point of view of control and revenue the German Colony should enforce licensing as the English Gold Coast does, Martin comments that there are many spirits -booths in Akwapim and Krobo, and while when he first came to Anum there were none, now in Anum there are 3, in Boso 1, and in Labolabo (on the Volta) 1 - with a prospect of an increasing number in the future. Spirits cost roughly twice as much west as east of the Volta – the English regulations about spirits in Keta are less harsh in order to keep in step with German regulations, but the English have a customs barrier up the Volta from Ada to the Afram mouth to check smuggling. Of course, he does not know what influence relations with the French have over German policy - he has no knowledge on this, and no experiences in the Franco-German border districts. The land had already been chosen, and agreement in principle come to with the owner, a certain woman. On Martin’s visit to clinch the deal, however, he met with some opposition from the woman, who felt that her ancestors would plague her if she sold the family land (it is specifically stated that the woman was not a member of the chief's or elders' family). Martin suggested she should move onto the land herself to which she replied 'I am not moving out of my house, and out of my town'. When he asked her if she was saying that she intended to serve the fetishes rather than God, however, she said that no-one knows what will happen tomorrow. He also tried to persuade her to this by holding up the example of her nephew, one Okuru, who had apparently been cured of leprosy since he became a Christian. The Botoku linguist was also encouraging the woman towards the sale, and after 6 hours it was completed for £1, on condition that a small patch was left as family land. He also reports the purchase of a plot of land at Evhudidi - 20 marks was paid to the chief, and 40 marks to four other men. In the marking of the boundaries the chief was taught to use the compass. Martin also transmits an account of the 'awakening' described in Hall's annual report. He had himself experienced something of the impact of the movement - large crowds of hearers and no barracking in the towns of Kagyabi, Ntomda, Wurupong and Tayi (reached, he writes, by bush-path from Wurupong). The journey was an extremely happy experience shared as equals by Martin and Pastor Hall. He then translates a letter from Hall about the large congregations, collapse of resistance from the heathen, presence of chief Kofi (of Ntwumuru, presumably) at services. Large numbers of boys had been enrolled - 4 from each village making the total of pupils in the school 45. The connection with of German punitive actions is stated as far as recruitment of pupils is concerned. Hall reports that first-lieutenant von Massow with 3 officers and 106 soldiers had come to Nkonya because a soldier had been beaten and severely wounded in Ntwumuru (Hall writes the “King’s Town”) and because the people of Ntomda had not behaved as they should to Graf von Zech on a recent journey to the coast. He threatened to take prisoner the whole body of chiefs of Nkonya unless the men responsible for the beating were produced. Hall says he was the peoples' only hope, but he was on a journey to Botoku on the day in question.
