A visit by a missionary to these villages is apparently rare since the Wesleyans do not come to the farming villages much. The next day he passed 6 Accra farming villages before he reached Osu villages en route for Abokobi (Legon not mentioned by name once more). The house at Abokobi has been severly damaged by white ants in recent months. The farming villages are deserted because of the conflict with the British. Boamma over a slave. There had been enmity between Abr. Boama and the other slaves of Piedu before he became a Christian. After he became a Christian the young slave of his whom he had given to Piedu to replace his services fell ill. A fetish told him that he was ill because he was not serving his former master, and Boamma became to be suspected of witchcraft and poisoning. People began to threaten him with the carrying of the corpse if the young slave died. At this stage the missionaries intervened and organised a meeting with Apiedu. Boamma defended himself so vehemently that it almost came to blows. After the missionaries had silenced him Piedu recited the possible causes of Boamma’s enmity to the young slave, including the fact that he was having intimate relations with a girl whose mother had refused to allow Boamma to have her as his wife. The missionaries declared, however, that there was no reason to suspect Boamma at all - the idea that he wanted the slave back was impossible, since no baptised Christian had slaves. And if the Kibi people started to threaten Boamma with carrying the corpse then the matter would be taken to the Governor. The missionaries had been taken prisoner, and before chief Openten it had had to be decided whether they were to be killed or set free. Eventually the decision was taken to send them to Karikari, and their belongings were sent ahead of them. After two days journey Ramseyer had protested about the conditions of the march, and they were provided with 14 carriers for the three adults (they were now with a Frenchman) with two carrying baskets, and two men to carry the child. The missionaries asked what had happened about their clothes and headgear, and whether their heads had been shaved, since alarming rumours had been circulating on this point. The refugee replied that they had kept their clothing and headgear and had not been shaved. At the Asante attack, the Anums and Crepes had fled to a hill called Tatabari Nyampon, from where they made frequent attacks on the Asantes, and had taken many prisoners. They had also killed many Asantes by sending stones down on them as they attacked the hill. When hunger became a problem they sent slaves to the more distant farms, but many of these had been captured by the Asantes. The situation had become difficult, with sickness and hunger making great inroads in the numbers of armed men. The Anglos had fought with the Asantes at first, but now had left them after gaining little success, and suffering the misfortune of running out of bullets and having to use instead cowries and little stones. The Asantes now stand in danger of being cut off from their homeland through an Akim army, which is standing in the Nort-West of Begoro. The Asantes' main objective is the head of the Crepe king, Kwadwo Dee. The Akwamus are especially concerned to take Dompere dead or alive. The source of this information had been twice captured, twice escaped, and on his return to Kwahu had found his wife had been taken away with a small piece of cloth tied around her loins, to indicate that she was a sacrifice at the next great festival in Kumasi. At this he had expressed himself in such a way that severe punishment would follow, and had fled. He had been an eye witness of the state of the white prisoners, and had seen the missionaries' goods being transported to Kumasi. He had also been in Kwahu shortly after their passage through Kwahu to Kumasi. As for the situaition in Akim - there were reports of an Asante army in North-West Akim, but this turned out to be only a group of Kwahus. Fining from Begoro and Diedu from Asiakwa are encamped on the North-West border, and Ampao of Kukurantumi is on the North-West border following the Kwahu activity, but expects to be there only a week. Mrs Kromer had been sent to Accra, and the missionaries had secured their movable possessions. Partly a description of the death of Abraham Boama – very peaceful and faithful, on the mission station (Lodholz had to ask permission of his master to bring him there during his last days.). He quotes a late speech of his - 'You (Lodholz) must bury me, and pray over my grave. I don't want to be buried by the heathen, nor placed in their cemetery. You must make me a coffin, and when you put me in it you must not smear me with white earth like the heathen do for purification, nor must you wrap my body in a cloth but in a shroud.' He writes also about William Dapa, ex-servant and washerman of Eisenschmid’s, whom he had visited through two severe illnesses. In his first Lodholz reckoned he could already see the mark of faith in him - especially in that he learned to suffer his illness patiently, and with his eyes on the Lord. Also he became franker and franker in his dealings with himself. After his illness he showed the change in him in practical ways - paid off his few debts, made his own tools and set out to earn his living fully as a carpenter. In his second illness he spoke even more frankly to Lodholz, giving him an insight into Akim psychology and concepts he had not had before confessing earlier sins and unfaithfulness, and talking to him about the true state of people in the community and in Kibi itself. He told Lodholz in detail how at the time of the last Odwira a man had been sacrificed by the Okyehhene and his blood sprinkled on the drums and other musical instruments. His history shows just how, when the Holy Spirit really begins to work in the hearts of the African members of the community, it improves their relations with the missionaries. He also describes the conclusion of peace between the ‘eastern Akims' and the ‘western Akims' who for the first time he calls Kotokuers, and reports that they got their name from their carrying of the Asantehene's pocket - kotoku. The intermediary was Ferguson, who conveyed to the king the Governments's displeasure at the constant rumours of another war between Kibi and the ex-Gyadam people. (Lodholz remarks that these were founded at least on the fadt that in the last year and in 1870 the Okyenhene had expressed his hatred for his uncle's enemies, and had. talked about fighting them once more). The meeting to arrange the peace took place at Akanten. It was stormy – the Kokotus wanted to lay down conditions unacceptable to the Kibi ambassadors, for example that a certain head of an ex-Gyadam family, who had sworn fetish to serve the old king Ata and had been given the right to settle in east Akim, should be returned to Kotoku. This turned out to be a point which the ambassadors were insisting on, not Efua (Kotokuhene), and it was eventually dropped. In the ceremony of making the peace Ferguson's interpreter took the Kotoku fetish Kyere to the 5 Kibi ambassadors to drink, it being fanned by a boy with an elephant's tail. It was contained in a brandy bottle carried in a small brass pan, and carried in complete silence with great reverence shown on the faces of the onlookers. The feta was a dirty white liquid. Ferguson's interpreter (a heathen) had taken Dyon leaves, and formed them into a sort of cup in the first three fingers of his right hand. He then poured out some of the drink, set the toes of his left foot over the toes of the left foot of the individual who was to drink, and made a speech in which he stressed that if the drinker was intent on treachery, the fetish should kill him. After this he poured from the drink in his hand three times into the mouth of the man making the oath, poured the rest ever his head. At this the Ambassador leaned to one side, shuddered and spat three times. The Kotokus had to drink Wankobabi, this fetish being in a beer bottle, and shaded by three boys with fresh-cut palm branches. It is water from a stream that flows into the Berem 1 1/2 hours North-East of Kibi. After this the remainder of the fetish was poured out by its owners on the road leading to the other's country. While this was going on the horn players sang the praises of the fetish. Following this ceremony invitations were exchanged by ambassadors who came to the two capitals to congratulate the kings at the time of their yearly festivals. The two Kotoku ambassadors knew Kromer, and he also recognised them. The Ferguson mission was also concerned with an attempt to get the Kibi people to hand over their Asante prisoners to the English Government at Cape Coast in order to facilitate a general exchange. The Akims would only give up one young man, however, on the grounds that they wanted to see their own prisoners first. Date A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource Date early: 13.04.1872 Proper date: 13.04.1872 Description An account of the resource Taking up his own earlier news about the Mohammedans in Akim and Schrenk's mention of them (Annual Report 1871, p76), Lodholz reports their further history. They were based on Kibi, and travelled to the other towns. On their preparation to leave Kibi, however - indeed after the wife had left - the Kibi people took up the idea that they were Asante spies. Lodholz remarks that this is not surprising in view of the war which was going on on the Volta, and they were accused of collecting pebbles from all the Akim towns in order to make a medicine which would kill all their inhabitants, white men included. The husband therefore was made a prisoner, and his wife brought back to Kibi. When the missionaries first interested themselves in the case it seemed there was little danger, but some months later the case was discussed in a full assembly because an ambassador had come from 'Fante chiefs' whose message was that the man should be released since he was a fante. The man himself defended himself before a huge still crowd, speaking good Twi so that the missionaries understood every word. His statements were contradicted, however, but two other fantes who reckoned they had seen him in Kumasi, and could reveal the precise relation between him and the Asantehene in relation to Akim. At this he was sent into Apiedu's compound, and he and his body slaves and 2 of his 3 wives were put in the block. For a time after this secret messengers went to and from between Akim, Akwapim, Ga, Fante 'and so on' concerning the case - even a messenger from the Commandant in Accra who came officially to ask for the man's release, or at least his being handed over to the English Government, in fact also had secret relations with the Accra chief over the case. There must have been a secret agreement between these tribes as to what was to be done to the man. Eventually he and two of his wives were executed in Kibi, and later on two of his body slaves were executed in Banso. Their children were taken away (the missionaries tried to intercede, especially for the suckling child of the third wife who was seized from her by the mob, but were unsuccessful). Lodholz writes concerning these Mohammedans that they went around like mountebanks in Europe by sleight of hand appearing to change sand or earth into gold dust. The Asafo played a major part in the downfall of the Mohammedans, and Lodholz asks therefore what is its attitude to themselves. The answer - there is a systematic attempt to prevent anyone, slave or free, becoming a Christian. For the free men, the technique is for the Asafo to fine him enough sheep to put him into serious debt.
