NB however this title is radically inadequate compared with the contents of the box. A thin envelope has the same title as the folder, and was not examined by me - the letters are very tightly folded. The rest of the folder is exclusively made up of personal letters in German from 1859 to 1893/99, almost all years being represented. They were all written in Germany, and mostly addressed to Marie Kaundinya by members of her family in Württemberg. (It is true that her sister Emilie is especially well represented), though some letters are addressed to Hermann Kaundinya, and some to the two of them together. It may well be that not all are family letters, some being from friends. The letters were in no visible order, and are now roughly ordered by year, with a special group of letters whose date could not be ascertained. NB the fact that Emily is referred to as "Aunt" suggests that a child or children of Hermann and Marie Kaundinya was/were responsible for ordering these papers. The primary content of the box is a series of 22 copy books (Nos. I and X are, however, missing) used by Hermann Kaundinya to record the text of letters he sent to people, in the years 1854-1863. All (probably) are "Wedgwood Patent Improved Copy Books", which enabled the making of carbon-paper-type copies. The copies are unfortunately faint, and the paper becoming blotchy. Unfortunately, too, Kaundinya listed the addressees only up to folio 215 (in book IV). These are primarily Basel Mission colleagues in India (letters in German), though other people in India are also addressed (letters in English) as are some people in Europe (NB especially personal letters to members of the mission house staff in Basel, and to Dr Barth in Calw). The most frequent addressee by far is Herrmann Mögling. There are five items in this box over and above the copy books referred to above: a small notebook with brown paper cover with thoughts on scripture passages, perhaps in the handwriting of Marie Kaundinya a small notebook with hard covers marked "3466 Kaundinya", and recording rent payments 1902-1914 a small notebook with a black linen cover, a pocket book for daily use, notes in German, probably from Marie Stamm-Kaundinya, some parts evidenty refer to India (Equipment for a 14-day journey e.g.) A 1909 Lett’s "South African Rough Diary" with what seems to be an extended chronological index of events in the history of the Basel Mission in India. A large hard-covered black notebook, largely unused, notes often in shorthand.
