<text>These documents have been rebound in the 1990s with no label or title, but the original title will have corresponded to what we give above. See the description of C-1.50: this volume is unusual in binding letters and reports from North Karnataka (South Mahratta) with those from North Kerala (Malabar). The Nilgiri documents for 1872 are anomalously bound in C-1.52. The reasons for these new divisions are obscure. The amount of correspondence is of the same order of magnitude as in preceding years. In spite of this reorganisation the individual sections correspond to those in the relevant parts of C-1.46 and C-1.47. In this volume too (as in C-1.51) the documents are numbered right through. It contains 182 documents. The next two volumes, C-1.52 and C-1.53, with the correspondence for 1873, can be seen as mavericks. What is usually in the first volume of correspondence for a particular year is filed in the second. And with the material in the first volume of the year (which you normally find in the second) is filed the Nilgiris correspondence for the previous year. Nevertheless once one has grasped the unorthodoxy of the arrangement of the materials at this "macro-level" the internal organisation of the volumes into sections is the one which familiar from the preceding years. And the documents are again (as in C-1.48 and C-1.49) numbered in the sections, and not through the whole volume.

NB some documents from the Canara district have been filed separately in C-1.56, see below. These consist of papers from a meeting of the District Conference in, apparently, Feb. 1875. The section on the Canara District in this volume is composed of correspondence with the District Executive Committee and its members. Selected interesting captions taken from the section indexes: General Conference documents 27-36 are reports from 10 different India missionaries on the administrative and financial independence of the congregations. NB there are apparently parallel reports in the volumes of correspondence from Ghana and from China. Mangalore documents about journeys undertaken: Mangalore 56 (Udipi, Kundapur); 60 (the Indian catechist Israel Aaron, English original); 61 (Kudre-Mukh); 77 (Tululand general). Mangalore documents reporting on craft work in the congregation: Mangalore 72 & 73 on the erection of a "mechanical workshop"; 76 on "Our craftsmen". Mangalore 63-65 & 83, petition of the congregational elders for the establishment of an English-medium school. Mulki 89-91 & 95: an outstation, Padur. Mulki 96 & 97: school work, the former on the girls’ school in Mulki. Mulki 93: a reply to a letter of the Basel Committee on the learning of Sanskrit. Udipi 118: the economic situation of the billavas Karkal 125: the experiences of a missionary who acts as a nurse Hermelink wrote a number of reports which look of interest: Karkal 127 about experiences on a preaching journey; Karkal 128 partly "About Bhutan worship and the Jains"; Karkal 129 on the worship of Mariamma. Ananadapoor 147: Kaundinya on the life of a congregational elder, Anandapoor 155 partly a Kaundinya report on the fate of a dying woman. Anandapoor 156 contains a list of mission and church landholdings in Kurg. All five Mercara documents were written by Kittel. Three are about administrative matters, but Mercara 157 is about Kannada proverbs, and Mercara 160 about the Sanskrit literature of the Lingayats. Dharwar 168: a court-case in which T. Costa was involved. Dharwar 169: Costa’s quarterly report on the story of Krishna-baische. Hubli 176: the hindu festival in Yemmanuru, Hubli 182 on the festival in Shirhatti. This is undated but the supporting documents indicate that it took place in February 1875 in Mangalore. The supporting documents are exclusively the MSS of reports (Referate) given by individual missionaries to the conference: Brigel on the charge being made "repeatedly in recent years at home" that the missionaries contribute more to stability than to mobility, that they are pastors and teachers and travel and preach too little to non-christians (18 pp). Männer: ought there not be a summary ("Epitome") of the Old Testament available for Tulu-speaking christians? (8 pp). Kaundinya on how to handle pregnancies out of wedlock "among girls and widows" (4 pp). Catechist Charles Gojar’s translated report (German) on the same subject (12 pp.) Hüttinger on the growing difficulties of helping young men to learn a profession (14 pp). Samuel Bunyan’s translated report (German) on the same subject (3 pp). A comment ("Beibericht") by Brigel on the conference.

<text>This volume corresponds in size and organisation to C-1.58. It is numbered right through. There are 201 documents. Three volumes of documents for the year 1877 follow C-1.60. The amount of correspondence in 1877 is perhaps 15 % larger than in 1876, and this seems to have resulted in an attempt to turn what had been the first of two annual volumes into two somewhat handier volumes. This three-volume structure continues till 1881. The organisation of the volumes also shows some interesting innovations. In South Karnataka there is a section for a mission station at Kundapur for the first time. Both at the General and District Conference levels there are sub-sections for different parts of the upper administration of the Basel Misison in India, not least for the two Mission District Inspectors of Schools. Most important: note that in Canara there are minutes of a meeting of a District Conference dated 28th November, and minutes of a meeting of a District Synod, dated 3rd December. The "Conference" is almost certainly the organ of the missionaries, the Synod a conscious development of an ecclesiastical organ and - this is visible in the list of speakers who gave reports - included a substantial number of indigenous people. Note for other references to the elusive "first Synod" in this or any of the other Basel Mission districts in India C-5-2.8 and C-5-2.9. But note ALSO the reference to District Synods held in Northern Kerala in 1868 and 1869, in Q-9.6.15 on pp. 281-282 above. Confusingly enough in C-1.61 the documents are numbered in three groups (General Conference, District officials, mission stations in South Mahratta). In C-1.62 each section is numbered separately. And C-1.63 is numbered through. NB "Ostindien" - literally: East India - was a common designation for the Indian Sub-continent at this time and appears in the Basel Mission archive frequently as a synonym for India.
