<text>NB This is the only volume up to 1875 which retains its original binding and label. The discrepancy between the modern serial numbers taken over by the enumeration of C-1 in the 1990s, and already established in 1972, is presumably to be explained by the intrusion into a more narrowly defined series (ONLY letters and reports from South India) of the foreign bodies now registered under C-1.1; C-1.9; C-1.10 and perhaps C-1.19, a volume on economic and practical matters which may have been, at some stage, part of the archive of the Mission Trading Company. See the Introduction to C-1, on pp. 14above. This volume begins with a section devoted to the Executive Committee of the General Conference, with 12 documents. Then follows a section for the "Canara District" (i.e. South Karnataka) with 45 documents, the Mangalore station (90 documents), Mulki (10), Udipi (19), Kurg (10), Südmahratta District Conference (2 documents); Dharwar (23); Hubli (11), Bettigeri (22), Guledgudd (12). Select list of interesting documents judging by the captions in the section indexes: 9 documents in the section of the Executive Committee are devoted to the Regulations for Deacons (= approx. Assistant Pastors) Canara District 21b is a petition from the elders of Mangalore and Mulki for "the introduction of Canaresish in church and school", which is perhaps linked to 22f on the use of Kannada in schools, to two statements by missionaries at Canara District 30 and 31, and to 23e about introducing Kannada in the Tulu area, with comments on this by Hauff and Müller at 40 and 41.. Canara District 23c is about the problem that christians "watch" "heathen" festivals, with statements on this theme by Seb. Furtado and Daniel Aaron at Canara District 32 & 34, and by the missionary Männer at 33. Canara District 23d is about problems in choosing family and baptismal names with a comment by Stolz at 36. Mulki 8 is a Quarterly Report by Männer on the village of Santuru, Udipi 2, 5 and 8 are concerned with mission work in Shirwa Kurg 6 is concerned with rice-growing in Kurg/Kodagu Mark’s Quarterly Reports (Hubli 2, 5 and 9) are all entitled "Indian Pantheism", and two of Huber’s reports are about the history of the mission station (Hubli 6 & 7). Würth’s reports Bettigeri 3 & 9 seem to be part of a long systematic report on Hindu society and religion.

It does begin with a section on the correspondence of the General Conference Executive Committee. Unusually the section index gives the listed documents no reference number - there are about 17 of them. Then follows the section on the Canara District Conference which again has the unusual feature that the serial numbers given are roman numerals, from I to XXXI. From here the volume is organised as we would expect it to be, with - as in most recent years - a section named for Anandapoor, and no section named "Kurg". NB two documents in English - an inspection report for a BM school in Tellitscheri and a petition from old boys of a BM school in Mangalore - are neither bound into this volume, nor included in relevant sectional indexes, but lie in an envelope at the beginning of the volume. The petition has over 50 signatures, and a whole page of notes in Josenhans’ handwriting.

<text>Volume C-1.44 was rebound ca. 2003 and is now in two separate parts, C-1.44 and C-1.44a. This reflects a rather larger body of materials than have been filed in previous years - perhaps as much a 33% more than C-1.36, for example. C-1.44 simply contains documentation generated by a meeting of the Indian General Conference of the Basel Mission in Mangalore in February 1869. It has a single index at the beginning listing the 48 documents it contains, with, in each case, a short caption, in excellent handwriting. C-1.44 and C-1.44a correspond to the structure of filing as we saw it in C-1.36. The separation between C-1.44 and C-1.44a could, perhaps, have been more logical - the correspondence of the General Conference Executive Committee and the General Conference Treasurer [the latter responsible for Basel Mission finances in South India as a whole] is bound in as a section at the beginning of C-1.44a. This is followed by the sections with which we are familiar: Canara District Conference and its individual stations, and the South Mahratta District Conference and its individual stations. The only innovation is that there is now a separate named section for "Mercara", following the new section for Anandapoor. In a pocket in the front end-papers of C-1.44a are two printed documents - - Einige Schulberichte von Missionar Fr. Müller in Udapi (some reports about educational work in the Udipi district) 16 pp., 1868 - Protocoll der Verhandlungen der 8ten General Conferenz der Basler Evanglischen Mission im südwestlichen Indien....Mangalore 1869 (Minutes of the 8th General Conference in the Basel Mission in India, Mangalore, Feb. 1869) 20 pp.

<text>The reference to [volume] 46 corresponds to the remark already made on C-1.36 above. The label which is quoted here is a photocopy of a label which was evidently removed when the volume was rebound and renovated in the 1990s. This volume only partially corresponds to C-1.46, containing only the General Conference and the South Karnataka correspondence. North Karnataka correspondence is to be found in C-1.51. The amount of correspondence is nevertheless of the same order of magnitude as that found in C-1.46. This volume also shows one new organisational trait: where in previous volumes the documents were numbered within the individual sections, here they are numbered through the whole volume. It contains, indeed, 217 documents. For the first time a section exists for correspondence from Karkala, bound in between the sections for Udipi and Honowar. Replies to a Committee query about roofing materials used on Basel Mission stations is collected at C-10.5.9
