<text>NB „Oekonomie" in the Schwabian version of German in the 19th century refers especially to the land around a house on which a family grew (some of) its food. With this background "Oekonomie" in the German of the Basel Mission refers to practical local support structures - questions, to farming, and to any craft- or industrial production process which may have been connected with the Mission. A fair translation of this volume’s title in English would be, therefore: Reports from those responsible for the "economy" of the Basel Mission in India in general, and of those responsible for the "economy" of the Mission in its three districts of Southern and Northern Karnataka and North Kerala, 1854 to 1868. The volume contains 158 separate documents which are listed in an index at the front. They have been bound in more or less in date order. There are no sub-sections defined by individual districts or mission stations. The index includes (for the first time in Series C-1) a caption giving a short indication of the document’s contents. Although the title indicates the the earliest documents date from 1854 in fact there are only 9 documents from the years 1854-1859 inclusive. There are, however, 33 documents from 1860, 16 from 1861. 4 from 1862, 43 from 1863, 15 from 1864, none from 1865 and 1866, 11 from 1867 and 20 from 1868. This volume does not have a fully clear function in relation to the main C-1 volumes from these years. Indeed, for 1867-8 it mainly seems to be a collecting point for items sent to Basel by G. Pfleiderer, who was the head of the Mission’s practical administration in those years. Nevertheless, looked at as a whole it contains a lot of material on land purchase, land administration (rents for people settled on mission land), building, and the training and activity of craftsmen. People working on individual places - Kodakal e.g. - would find it well worth while checking to see what local reports have found their way into this particular volume.

There is an apparently incomplete MS report in English on schools in an envelope at the back of the volume. It has no formal beginning, but the dates it twice mentions are 1857, not 1855.

The organisation and the style of indexing of C-1.23 remains very similar to that of C-1.20, but the sections are changing, as will be evident from a comparison between the paragraph which follows and the equivalent paragraph in the comment on C-1.20. The individual sections are named "Canara District Conference" (3 documents, though these exceptionally have no individual reference numbers, and are not individually listed); Mangalore (98 documents); "Dr Gundert’s Letters" (16); Mulki [&] Udipi (56); "South Mahratta District Conference" (10 documents, individually numbered, but not individually listed); Hubli (13 documents); Gadag Betgeri (11); Malasamudra (12); Guledagudda (5); Malabar District Conference (10); Cannanore (46); Talatscheri (24); Chombala (28); Kolikodu [=Calicut] (28); Palakadu [= Palghat] (14); Keti (25); Alamanda & Madikeri (5); Kodagu Stations (1857 & 1858 (23).

<text>NB in 1859 the Quarterly Reports were collected together in a separately bound volume: C-1.25, see below. The style of indexing remains very cursory, but the inner organisation of the volume is somewhat different from C-1.23, and we have, consequently, listed the different sections here with the number of documents in each. The volume begins with a section which has lost its title page and index, but is evidently the minutes and correspondence of the "Missionaries’ General Conference" of the Basel Mission in India, the Mission’s local directorate. This section consists of 13 documents, some very substantial. It ends with a 4-page lithographed draft of the regulations for the Widows’ and Orphans’ Fund of the Indian Catechists working for the Basel Mission, and with a 56-page lithographed draft of regulations for Basel Mission schools in India. There follows a separate section for the minutes of the Canara District Conference [of the Basel Mission] in September and November 1859, followed by the Stations of what we would now call the Basel Mission district of Southern Karnataka: Mangalore (68 documents, NB documents 60-68 have been misfiled between document 45 and 46); Udipi & Mulki (20 documents); Madikeri (44 documents, including some letters written from Anandapoor). The District Conference Minutes from South Mahratta, March and August 1859 (two documents) precede the documents from individual stations in this North Karnataka district; Dharwad (5 documents); Hubli (10); Gadag Betgeri (9); Malasamudra (6); Guledagudda (3); The District Conference minutes from Malabar (2 documents) are followed by the sections for the individual stations in North Kerala: Cannanore (36 documents); Talatscheri (27); Calicut [the orthography has returned to 19th century orthodoxy] (25); Chomabala (13); Palghat (11) and Keti (18). An envelope at the end of this volume contains two documents reflecting discussion taking place in the Mission Committee in Basel: Gundert’s opinion on the position of English-medium schools in the Basel Mission in India dated Basel 5th July 1859, and an extensive minute on a Committee decision relating to industrial and economic activities of the Basel Mission in India, dated April-June 1859.

<text>This volume contains 101 documents. They have all been given serial numbers. There is no bound-in index, though what appears to be the draft MS preparation for an index is filed loosely in an envelope at the end of the volume. And indeed, the order in which the reports have been bound together seems to correspond to the order in which the individual stations appear in C-1.24 and in the draft list. If this is the case the relative scarcity of letters from Northern Karnataka in C-1.24 is balanced by the larger volume of quarterly reports from that area in this volume, though the draft list does not include the Northern Karnataka stations. NB a quarterly report by Würth on Hindu/Lingayat beliefs, dated June 1859, has been filed in C-1.26, in an appendix (Anhang) at the end of the volume. Series C-1 in the 1860s. From 1860 the characteristic organisation of the annual filing of the letters and reports received from India has one volume covering the correspondence of the Mission’s central administration in India, PLUS correspondence from the two Kannada-speaking districts ("South Mahratta" and "Canara"), and a second volume covering the correspondence from North Kerala ("Malabar") and the Nilgiris. The volume of correspondence each year remains more or less constant. This Guide offers a detailed insight into the organisation of the volumes for 1860 (C-1.26 and C-1.27) and 1865 (C-1.36 and C-1.37) but will only comment on the organisation of the years 1861-19 when these diverge from the 1860 norm. The indexing continues, on the whole, unhelpful and very cursory, but there are signs that "help is on the way" -a caption is given for the content of Quarterly Reports in these volumes. When this is possible the Guide gives some specimen indications of what look like especially interesting single reports, or groups of reports, for 1860 and 1865.

There is a cross-reference to three documents (C-1.27.Nilagiris.24 to 26) in the year above in which they were originated. C-1.27.Nilagiris.27 is an undated paper from Bühler containing 90 sayings from the Nilgiris in German translation, and the situations in which they were used. Selection of particular titles from the Quarterly Reports: Müller "On the Taliparamba Festival", and "Visit to the Rajah of Chiracal" (Cannanore 22 & 23); Hanhart "The annual festivals in Malayalam country" (Cannanore 31). Burckhardt "A movement in a fishing village" (Talatscheri 29) Irion "Preaching in the Bazaar in Talatscheri" (Talatscheri 32) Diez on preaching journeys (Chombala 7 & 9) Convert on Gundert’s farewell (Calicut 18), and impressions of the case ofcatechist Esau (Calicut 20). (There is also a summary biography of one Anna Subaya as appendix to the Annual Report from Calicut (Calicut 22). This contains 36 documents, including systematic reports of each of the three Basel Mission districts in India, 3 (and in some cases more) different reports presented on each of the themes "Schools for non-christian children", "The need for reading materials", "English medium schools" and "orphanages". There is also a resolution on the wearing of glass bangles, with a comment by Kaundinya. NB the MS minutes of this conference are at C-10.6.2. From then on the structure and contents of the volume more or less correspond to those of C-1.26. The "Kurg" section is renamed "Mercara", and a number of the reports have the dateline Anandapoor. Not many captions for the Quarterly Reports are given in the indexes of the individual sections. Among the few on offer is a report by Männer on Bhuta worship and missionary preaching (Udipi 11); two reports by Huber entitled "indigenous life" (Hubli 10-11). Würth has another report on the Kannada Lingayat poet Sarvagna ([Gadag] Betgeri 10) and reports entitled "Testing Religion" (Gadag / Betgeri 11-13).

<text>In contrast to C-1.28 there is no section in this volume for the minutes and correspondence of the Basel Mission General Conference in India. There is also a separate section for the mission station in Honowar. The reports on Kurg are once more under the heading "Kurg", and not "Mercara", and continue to include materials from Anandapoor. Otherwise the volume is organised on the lines of C-1.26. The indexing is becoming more detailed, and a selection of particular captions from the section indexes is made here: Canara District Conference documents 17-23 seems to be an extended discussion of Basel Mission schools. A large number of Mangalore documents are explicitly about the Printing Press (Mangalore 3, 6, 23-5, 36, 61, 72-83), whereby Mangalore 83 is an extended inventary of materials and machinery. NB MS reports and letters from the printer Jakob Hunziger (Mangalore 1856-63) (including this inventory) were transcribed by Ms Dora Hörner in Jakob Hinziker aus Kanton Bern: Sein Leben in seinen Briefen und Berichten ca. 200 S., duplicated & privately published, Basel 1987. Bührer reports on preaching journeys in the district around Mangalore (Mangalore 16 & 41) There is a life history of Paul Ganeschrao Kausika at Mangalore 17a. Kittel writes a three-part report on the Jains (Mangalore 20, 43 &54). "5 days at the indigenous festival at Perdur" (Udipi 8). Daily services in the Krishna Temple (Männer, Udipi 14). "5 weeks in Gudde und Utschila" (Traub, Udipi 21). Albrecht on the festival for the deities in Gokarna (Honor 5). First christian marriage in Kurg (Kurg 6) On growing coffee (Hahn, Kurg 16 & 17). Three Quarterly Reports by Titus Costa, an Indian pastor who had been trained in Basel, are filed at Dharwar 1-3, including (No. 3) a report in the language-teacher Satwirappa. These are reports in German in the old German handwriting. Diary of a preaching journey by the catechists Chinnappa and Gurushidha Nov. 1861, (Hubli 1&2) Brunner on popular literature in Kannada (Hubli 7). Translating a Kannada poem against pantheismus (Würth, Bettigeri 4). The religious institutes of the Kannada population (Kies, Guledgudd 1 & 2) - a MS copy is also filed in C-10.2.20/12.

<text>The structure of the bound volumes for 1863 has to be recorded in detail. This volume begins with a 45-document section entitled "General Visitation of the Indian Stations 1863". The printed English-language Annual Reports of the Basel Mission refer to this process both under 1862 and 1863 and explain that instead of calling the missionaries together for a General Conference, which should have been held in 1863, the three top officials of the Basel Mission in India (Chairman, Secretary of the General Conference, and the "Agent" in charge of administration and finance) were visiting all mission stations. This section records their visits over the period January to October 1863. This is followed in the normal way by sections on the District Conference in South Karnataka (12 documents); Mangalore (87); Mulki & Udipi (26); Kurg/Kodagu (20), and in the same section index [sic!], Honowar (4). Owing to the size of the section for the Visitation, the North Karnataka reports and letters are filed in the next volume. Many but not all of the Quarterly Reports are given captions in the indexes.
