The six documents from Mangalore filed separately in 1850 seem to be concerned with a forerunner of the [Basel] Missionaries’ Annual Conference. The indexing style continues in the rather uninformative manner of C-1.2. C-1.4. Mangalore 1848,8 is a travel report written by the Indian catechist Simeon and translated into German - an indication that other materials derived from Indian employees of the mission may be found as early as the 1840s in Series C-1. C-1.4.Mangalore 1849,6, 59 and 60 are in Kannada. C-1.4.Mulki 1850,5 turns out to be the 25 p. MS in English of the English Annual Report for the whole of the Basel Mission in S. India The sections on the Nilgiris consist mostly of letters written in Kateri [this is presumably "Keti"] and Kotageri. C-1.4.Nilgiris 1850,1 and 12 are concerned with the Will of G.F. Casamajor. C-1.4.Nilgiris 1850,7 is a 5-column list of articles for sale, with prices, presumably from the property of Casamajor.

The section "Preaching, Travel Reports and Diaries 1838" contains material from Mögling (sermon), Hebich, Frey, Layer, Lehner and Greiner-with-Frey-and-Löscher. C-1.5,Dharwad 1837,16 (with a number of Appendices) is concerned with the beginning of the Dharwad mission station, mostly in English.

<text>This volume does not really belong in C-1., which is the official collection of letters and reports from Basel missionaries in India put together in Basel as part of the regular work of the Mission’s headquarters. It is a collection of important documents either sent from Basel to India or generated among the missionaries in India itself 1849-1856. Almost all of the documents are lithographic copies of circulars and minutes, some have Gundert's name at the head of the document. The volume was given to the Basel Mission by the Calwer Society's Bookshop in Stuttgart in June 1932. The "Calwer Missionsverlag" was an important publisher of missionary and pietist material in the northern Black Forest. Its second director was Hermann Gundert. It is probable that this volume is Hermann Gundert’s collection of documents concerned with the Indian visitation of Inspector Josenhans in 1851-52.

<text>This volume evidently contains what is intended as a full set of the minutes and regulations generated by Josenhans’ visitation as Inspektor (effectively: CEO). It covers all the areas where the Basel Mission was working, and includes notes on a number of one-to-one discussions with individual missionaries. As with C-1.9 the bulk of the material has been produced by a lithographic method which allowed for the duplication of handwritten MSS. But there are also some MS documents which were evidently not duplicated. There is a four-page index of contents at the front of the volume, but it is not organised as carefully as the normal C-1 volumes, and care must be taken in referring to its contents, since the documents do not have single unambiguous references. At the end of the volume a mauve paper file has been put into an envelope with the title Zur ostindischen Visitation 1851/1852. f.ii.2.b1 (i.e. "on the Visitation of East India 1851/2", with a reference number that now makes no sense). The main contents of this file are as follows: firstly, a large number of mostly single-sheet letters written to Josenhans in India or in some way linked to his visit and deliberations. secondly a number of letters written by Josenhans in his own hand to the Mission Committee in Basel thirdly, nos. 15 to 17 of the duplicated Vertrauliche Mitteilungen ("Confidential Information" distributed to leading supporters of the Mission), including in No. 15 a 3-page life of Hermann Kaundinya. Only no. 17 is dated (Sep. 1851). lastly, offprints of articles published in Evangelische Heidenbote on Josenhans’ visit to India

This volume was almost certainly created in India and belonged to the archive of a mission station, or an individual missionary. However, at the archive in Basel it was assigned to Inspector Josenhans' visitation journey with the reference number C-01. The volumen consists exlusively of lithographed circulars and protocolls. It seems to contain no documents which are not available in C-1.10 as well.

<text>NB This volume has neither a general index nor individual indexes to its separate parts. By the end of the volume the orthodox structure of sections corresponding to individual mission stations is visible, in the sense that the sheets of strong grey paper usually used at this time to separate one section from another are present, though they are smaller in format that of the dominant letters, and so not easy to find. The sections which can be identified are (in the order in which they appear): Mulki; a very small indeterminate section following the letters from Mulki; Dharwad; Hubli; Gadag Betgeri; Malasamudra (very little); Guledagudda / Gadag Betgeri (again) (very small section); Cannanore; Tellicherry; Chombala; Calicut; Kaity. The beginning of the volume consists of a large single section which takes up a quarter to a third of the whole. It seems to be a mixture of correspondence from the Basel Mission’s leading officials in India, and from the Mangalore station. This section includes some documents in English, some of them written by Indian members of the mission staff, and some documents in Kannada, again written by Indian members of the mission staff. Since this volume is neither indexed nor numbered through great care must be taken in referring to its contents, and researchers must be aware that as things stand it will be very difficult to identify a document unambiguously in such a way that other scholars will be able to find it. It is unusually large for this period of the Basel Mission in India. The contents between the covers are approx. 5 cm thick.

The first section consists of a large section in which correspondence from the Mangalore station is mixed with the correspondence of the documents generated by the Mission’s leading officials and organs in India. The Mangalore correspondence again includes materials from the Mission’s Indian staff. NB one document by Weigle on Lingayatism and dated 1853 has been filed in an appendix (Anhang) at the end of C-1.26. See C-1.15 for a more detailed exposition of the contents of C-1.14.

<text>NB „Oekonomie" in the Schwabian version of German in the 19th century refers especially to the land around a house on which a family grew (some of) its food. With this background "Oekonomie" in the German of the Basel Mission refers to practical local support structures - questions, to farming, and to any craft- or industrial production process which may have been connected with the Mission. A fair translation of this volume’s title in English would be, therefore: Reports from those responsible for the "economy" of the Basel Mission in India in general, and of those responsible for the "economy" of the Mission in its three districts of Southern and Northern Karnataka and North Kerala, 1854 to 1868. The volume contains 158 separate documents which are listed in an index at the front. They have been bound in more or less in date order. There are no sub-sections defined by individual districts or mission stations. The index includes (for the first time in Series C-1) a caption giving a short indication of the document’s contents. Although the title indicates the the earliest documents date from 1854 in fact there are only 9 documents from the years 1854-1859 inclusive. There are, however, 33 documents from 1860, 16 from 1861. 4 from 1862, 43 from 1863, 15 from 1864, none from 1865 and 1866, 11 from 1867 and 20 from 1868. This volume does not have a fully clear function in relation to the main C-1 volumes from these years. Indeed, for 1867-8 it mainly seems to be a collecting point for items sent to Basel by G. Pfleiderer, who was the head of the Mission’s practical administration in those years. Nevertheless, looked at as a whole it contains a lot of material on land purchase, land administration (rents for people settled on mission land), building, and the training and activity of craftsmen. People working on individual places - Kodakal e.g. - would find it well worth while checking to see what local reports have found their way into this particular volume.
