The first section consists of a large section in which correspondence from the Mangalore station is mixed with the correspondence of the documents generated by the Mission’s leading officials and organs in India. The Mangalore correspondence again includes materials from the Mission’s Indian staff. It seems that the larger part of the quaterly and annual reports for 1852 is in volume C-1.13.

NB one document by Weigle on Lingayatism and dated 1853 has been filed in an appendix (Anhang) at the end of C-1.26. See C-1.15 for a more detailed exposition of the contents of C-1.14.

<text>NB in 1859 the Quarterly Reports were collected together in a separately bound volume: C-1.25, see below. The style of indexing remains very cursory, but the inner organisation of the volume is somewhat different from C-1.23, and we have, consequently, listed the different sections here with the number of documents in each. The volume begins with a section which has lost its title page and index, but is evidently the minutes and correspondence of the "Missionaries’ General Conference" of the Basel Mission in India, the Mission’s local directorate. This section consists of 13 documents, some very substantial. It ends with a 4-page lithographed draft of the regulations for the Widows’ and Orphans’ Fund of the Indian Catechists working for the Basel Mission, and with a 56-page lithographed draft of regulations for Basel Mission schools in India. There follows a separate section for the minutes of the Canara District Conference [of the Basel Mission] in September and November 1859, followed by the Stations of what we would now call the Basel Mission district of Southern Karnataka: Mangalore (68 documents, NB documents 60-68 have been misfiled between document 45 and 46); Udipi & Mulki (20 documents); Madikeri (44 documents, including some letters written from Anandapoor). The District Conference Minutes from South Mahratta, March and August 1859 (two documents) precede the documents from individual stations in this North Karnataka district; Dharwad (5 documents); Hubli (10); Gadag Betgeri (9); Malasamudra (6); Guledagudda (3); The District Conference minutes from Malabar (2 documents) are followed by the sections for the individual stations in North Kerala: Cannanore (36 documents); Talatscheri (27); Calicut [the orthography has returned to 19th century orthodoxy] (25); Chomabala (13); Palghat (11) and Keti (18). An envelope at the end of this volume contains two documents reflecting discussion taking place in the Mission Committee in Basel: Gundert’s opinion on the position of English-medium schools in the Basel Mission in India dated Basel 5th July 1859, and an extensive minute on a Committee decision relating to industrial and economic activities of the Basel Mission in India, dated April-June 1859.

<text>In contrast to C-1.28 there is no section in this volume for the minutes and correspondence of the Basel Mission General Conference in India. There is also a separate section for the mission station in Honowar. The reports on Kurg are once more under the heading "Kurg", and not "Mercara", and continue to include materials from Anandapoor. Otherwise the volume is organised on the lines of C-1.26. The indexing is becoming more detailed, and a selection of particular captions from the section indexes is made here: Canara District Conference documents 17-23 seems to be an extended discussion of Basel Mission schools. A large number of Mangalore documents are explicitly about the Printing Press (Mangalore 3, 6, 23-5, 36, 61, 72-83), whereby Mangalore 83 is an extended inventary of materials and machinery. NB MS reports and letters from the printer Jakob Hunziger (Mangalore 1856-63) (including this inventory) were transcribed by Ms Dora Hörner in Jakob Hinziker aus Kanton Bern: Sein Leben in seinen Briefen und Berichten ca. 200 S., duplicated & privately published, Basel 1987. Bührer reports on preaching journeys in the district around Mangalore (Mangalore 16 & 41) There is a life history of Paul Ganeschrao Kausika at Mangalore 17a. Kittel writes a three-part report on the Jains (Mangalore 20, 43 &54). "5 days at the indigenous festival at Perdur" (Udipi 8). Daily services in the Krishna Temple (Männer, Udipi 14). "5 weeks in Gudde und Utschila" (Traub, Udipi 21). Albrecht on the festival for the deities in Gokarna (Honor 5). First christian marriage in Kurg (Kurg 6) On growing coffee (Hahn, Kurg 16 & 17). Three Quarterly Reports by Titus Costa, an Indian pastor who had been trained in Basel, are filed at Dharwar 1-3, including (No. 3) a report in the language-teacher Satwirappa. These are reports in German in the old German handwriting. Diary of a preaching journey by the catechists Chinnappa and Gurushidha Nov. 1861, (Hubli 1&2) Brunner on popular literature in Kannada (Hubli 7). Translating a Kannada poem against pantheismus (Würth, Bettigeri 4). The religious institutes of the Kannada population (Kies, Guledgudd 1 & 2) - a MS copy is also filed in C-10.2.20/12.

<text>NB This volume has neither a general index nor individual indexes to its separate parts. By the end of the volume the orthodox structure of sections corresponding to individual mission stations is visible, in the sense that the sheets of strong grey paper usually used at this time to separate one section from another are present, though they are smaller in format that of the dominant letters, and so not easy to find. The sections which can be identified are (in the order in which they appear): Mulki; a very small indeterminate section following the letters from Mulki; Dharwad; Hubli; Gadag Betgeri; Malasamudra (very little); Guledagudda / Gadag Betgeri (again) (very small section); Cannanore; Tellicherry; Chombala; Calicut; Kaity. The beginning of the volume consists of a large single section which takes up a quarter to a third of the whole. It seems to be a mixture of correspondence from the Basel Mission’s leading officials in India, and from the Mangalore station. This section includes some documents in English, some of them written by Indian members of the mission staff, and some documents in Kannada, again written by Indian members of the mission staff. Since this volume is neither indexed nor numbered through great care must be taken in referring to its contents, and researchers must be aware that as things stand it will be very difficult to identify a document unambiguously in such a way that other scholars will be able to find it. It is unusually large for this period of the Basel Mission in India. The contents between the covers are approx. 5 cm thick.

<text>Volume C-1.44 was rebound ca. 2003 and is now in two separate parts, C-1.44 and C-1.44a. This reflects a rather larger body of materials than have been filed in previous years - perhaps as much a 33% more than C-1.36, for example. C-1.44 simply contains documentation generated by a meeting of the Indian General Conference of the Basel Mission in Mangalore in February 1869. It has a single index at the beginning listing the 48 documents it contains, with, in each case, a short caption, in excellent handwriting. C-1.44 and C-1.44a correspond to the structure of filing as we saw it in C-1.36. The separation between C-1.44 and C-1.44a could, perhaps, have been more logical - the correspondence of the General Conference Executive Committee and the General Conference Treasurer [the latter responsible for Basel Mission finances in South India as a whole] is bound in as a section at the beginning of C-1.44a. This is followed by the sections with which we are familiar: Canara District Conference and its individual stations, and the South Mahratta District Conference and its individual stations. The only innovation is that there is now a separate named section for "Mercara", following the new section for Anandapoor. In a pocket in the front end-papers of C-1.44a are two printed documents - - Einige Schulberichte von Missionar Fr. Müller in Udapi (some reports about educational work in the Udipi district) 16 pp., 1868 - Protocoll der Verhandlungen der 8ten General Conferenz der Basler Evanglischen Mission im südwestlichen Indien....Mangalore 1869 (Minutes of the 8th General Conference in the Basel Mission in India, Mangalore, Feb. 1869) 20 pp.

A few documents are in English. MSS of materials to be published in the English-language Annual Reports are to be found at C-1.2.Mangalore.1840.28 and C-1.2.Mangalore 1841.1. C-1.2.Mangalore 1841.25 is an 8-page essay by a pupil of the Boarding School. It seems to be the recent history of his immediate Tamil family and is presented in good handwriting, in English.

The six documents from Mangalore filed separately in 1850 seem to be concerned with a forerunner of the [Basel] Missionaries’ Annual Conference. The indexing style continues in the rather uninformative manner of C-1.2. C-1.4. Mangalore 1848,8 is a travel report written by the Indian catechist Simeon and translated into German - an indication that other materials derived from Indian employees of the mission may be found as early as the 1840s in Series C-1. C-1.4.Mangalore 1849,6, 59 and 60 are in Kannada. C-1.4.Mulki 1850,5 turns out to be the 25 p. MS in English of the English Annual Report for the whole of the Basel Mission in S. India The sections on the Nilgiris consist mostly of letters written in Kateri [this is presumably "Keti"] and Kotageri. C-1.4.Nilgiris 1850,1 and 12 are concerned with the Will of G.F. Casamajor. C-1.4.Nilgiris 1850,7 is a 5-column list of articles for sale, with prices, presumably from the property of Casamajor.

Dacca 1849 c. 35 pp. In a pocket at the end of the volume are two loose documents. One is a summary of documents concerning "Central India" (roughly speaking: the tract between Mumbai and Kolkotta) prepared in Basel, 10 pp., dated 1845 and covering the years 1835-41. The second is a four page Basel MS of the Statutes and Bye-Laws of the Ost-Bengalische Missionsgesellschaft, i.e. the East Bengal Missionary Society, with no dates given. NB this volume traditionally belongs at the beginning of the long series of C-1 volumes on S. India, but obviously concerns another part of India, and is not part of the chronological order of what follows.
