The Missionshandelsgesellschaft (MHG) was founded in 1859 as a joint-stock corporation. Families from the Basel bourgeoisie in particular participated in this stock corporation. Parallel to the industrial commission, it was intended to co-finance the missionary work, first in West Africa and later in India, through trade in raw materials and the sale or exchange of goods in mission stations. Part of the revenues also went to the construction of mission buildings and transport infrastructure in West Africa. In 1882, the Industry Commission was incorporated by the MHG, thus mission trade and industry were now fully coordinated by it. As a result of expropriations during the First World War and the ensuing legal dispute with the British government, as well as tensions between MHG and the Missionary Committee, the MHG nominally separated from the Basel Mission in 1928 and was henceforth called "Basler Handelsgesellschaft" (BHG). Preiswerk was sent to West Africa for the first time as a delegate of the MHG in order to reclaim the property expropriated during the First World War and to prepare the resumption of trade by the Union Handelsgesellschaft founded one year later. He headed the Society from 1927. Later Max Preiswerk worked as a general agent on the Gold Coast and, together with his brother William Preiswerk-Tissot, formed the delegation of the BHG Board of Directors from 1938.William Preiswerk-Tissot took over the BHG presidency in 1938 from his father Wilhelm Preiswerk-Imhoff, who had held it from 1895 until his death in 1938.
