-tausch in Missionsstationen mitfinanzieren. The Missionshandelsgesellschaft (MHG) was founded in 1859 as a joint-stock corporation. Families from the Basel bourgeoisie in particular participated in this stock corporation. Parallel to the industrial commission, it was intended to co-finance the missionary work, first in West Africa and later in India, through trade in raw materials and the sale or exchange of goods in mission stations. Part of the revenues also went to the construction of mission buildings and transport infrastructure in West Africa. In 1882, the Industry Commission was incorporated by the MHG, thus mission trade and industry were now fully coordinated by it. As a result of expropriations during the First World War and the ensuing legal dispute with the British government, as well as tensions between MHG and the Missionary Committee, the MHG nominally separated from the Basel Mission in 1928 and was henceforth called "Basler Handelsgesellschaft" (BHG).
