Description
Section B Part I: Indonesia/Malaysia, publications in European Languages Introduction Until recently active Basel Mission involvement in the area of the East Indies Archipeligo was confined to the island of Borneo where the Mission has worked in three different situations: 1. In the early years of this Century the Mission came to be involved in helping existing Chinese Christian congregations, especially in British Worth Borneo (present-day Malaysian Sabah). This contact arose because of the emigration to Borneo of people connected with Basel Mission congregations in China proper. An independent Chinese language Church was founded in Sabah 1927, and now bears the name "The Basel Christian Church of Malaysia". 2. After the First World War the Basel Mission took over the work of the Barmen Mission (the Rheinland Mission) in Dutch Borneo, the present-day Southern and Central Province of Indonesien Kalimantan. This largely Dayak language work was initiated by the Barmen Mission in the 1840s. Since the Basel Mission takeover, an independent church has developed, being first constituted at a Synod in 1935. The name "The Dayak Church", familiar from the literature of the 1930s, is now much less used than the alternative title "Gere ja Kalimantan Evangelis" (Evangelical Church in Kalimantan, G.K.E.) 3. In the 1950s mission work has started among the Rungus Dusun, a sub-group of the autocthonous Momagun-speaking population in Sabah. In this connection, too, an independent church now exists, the "Rungus Church", or "Protestant Church in Sabah". The literature listed here is predominantly concerned with work ir the Dayak area of southern Kalimantan in the interwar period, the time and the area of the Basel Mission's most concentrated work in this region. Individual items give information on the history of the churches in Sabah and in a few cases books and pamphlets concern themselves with the wider Indonesian perspective. Other sections af interest to people wanting Information on Basel Mission publications concerning this region are: Section A, Part I: China, publications in European languages which contain a few items with information on Chinese-language churches in Sabah. Section B, Part II: Indonesia/Malaysia, publications in local languages , including Chinese publications stemming from Sabah.
