Description
May 1842: All the necessary papers are in his hand. Asks to conclude a contact with Mr. Forster to get a ship to fetch him in the West Indian Islands. Halleur shall travel independently — finishes his sawing machine model — speaks in his home land Mecklenburg. pp 3-4 to Rev. Latrobe, London, 19th May 1842: Explaining that difficulties in the way of the Africa missions are removed. pp 4-5 to the Moravian Mission direction, Berthelsdorf. 19th May 1843: News that Danish permission without the disagreeable close concerning Riis have been sent to London and received kindly by the officials there. p 113 to Sessing at Birnamwood, 27th January 1843: Reason, why not Sierra Leonians: Why not yet 2 or 3. In Germany aversion against episcopal advisability for Thompson to marry, but don't use persuasion. pp 114 and 121 To Rev. Winckler, Chichester, Jamaica, 27th and 31th January 1843: Thanks for kindness shown to Riis — personal matters. pp 282-285 to Riis, Widmann, Thompson Halleur, 27th Oct 1843: Answer to letters in 12 points. Important: Point 2: That the agreement with the colonists speaks of Moravian form of worship and church discipline should not be a law to be followed slavishly, but in the spirit according to local givings and the guidance of the spirit. Point 10: Concerning a plan to begin at Aburi: The committee wants more detailed reasons and will decide first always whether a new station is possible and feasible financially and in manpower. pp 285f to Halleur, 28th October 1843: Thanks for good news of arrival. Fatherly advise: Be more humble and more faithful in little things. Not good that he promised marriage to a girl in Islington and boasted that he was a full missionary trained at Berlin (Halleur is sent out as helper, not missionary). Sad, that Halleur forgot the account books and lost the lists with the content of the boxes sent to Akropong. p 286 to Widmann, 30th October 1843: Thanks, that he and Riis collaborate. Baptismal certificate does not concern the colonial chaplain at all. However, if a brother leaves the mission field he has to have an extract from the family register concerning baptism, marriage, death or what it may be endorsed by the Governor, not the colonial chaplain. pp 286-288, 28th October 1843: Letters of thanks to the Danish Governor, Mr. Lutterodt, the Wesleyan missionaries at Cape Coast. pp 288f, 28th October 1843: To the Moravian missionaries in Jamaica. Thanks. Sad that Rev. Zorn and Reichel have died - they, who did so much for the cause of the Christian settler scheme. pp 289-291 28th October 1843 to Rev. Miller, Jamaica. Wonders, whether the hurricane has spared the Mico institution. Thanks. pp 291: To Thompson in Akropong, 28th October 1843: Welcome to Mrs. Thompson to the mission work. Hope that Thompson will soon learn the vernacular and begins a good school. p 319 to Rev. John Beecham, Secretary Wesleyan Missionary Society, London, 12th January 1844: Brotherly letter, giving reasons why it is not advisable that the Methodists should start work on the Danish colony.
