The Asiatic Society of Bengal was founded in January 1784. Contents: -Hitopadesa, 155 numbered pages; -The Third Anniversary Discourse Delivered 2nd February 1786, 17 pp: -The Fourth Anniversary Discourse Delivered 15th February 1787, 19 pp -The Fifth Anniversary Discourse Delivered 21st February 1788, 31 pp.; -The Sixth Discourses[sic]; on the Persians Delivered 19th Febrary 1789, 32 pp.; -The Seventh Anniversary Discourse Delivered 25th February 1790, 21 pp. -A Short History of Persia, 27 pp. -Discourse the Ninth on The Origin and Families of Nations, Delivered ...23rd February 1792 17 pp. -On the Gods of Greece, Italy, and India, Written in 1784, And since revised, by The President, 57 pp., n.d. -3 Traditions concerning the Karens as a Nation, 13pp n.d. [apparently a collection of sayings and proverbs, grouped by topic] NB from "The Third Anniversary Discourse" to "A Short History of Persia" the pages are numbered consecutively as if they were double quarto sheets, i.e. the sheets are numbered, so every fourth page has a page number. From this it would appear that the book was bound after the pages had been written. This volume has been in the hands of the Basel Mission since the 19th century - its spine is marked "56", a reference number under which it appears in a nineteenth century Basel Mission Library catalogue. Presumably it consists of copies made by an interested scholar who had links with the Basel Mission and later handed this compilation over to the Basel Mission Library.
