NB this volume label has XLV written on it and crossed out in the original handwriting of the label. Someone has also written on it "52b" in blue pencil. See Introduction to Series C-1 above, pp. 14-15. In this volume the documents are numbered right through, rather than in sections. It consists of the following sections: General Conference (Executive Committee) (36 documents); Canara District (11 documents); Mangalore (36); Mulki (17); Udipi (21); Karkala (6); Honor (13); Anandapur (13); Mercara (5); South Mahratta Disatrict (3); Dharwar (7); Hubli (22); [Gadag] Betgeri (11); Guledagudda (8). NB some documents from the Canara district have been filed separately in C-1.56, see below. These consist of papers from a meeting of the District Conference in, apparently, Feb. 1875. The section on the Canara District in this volume is composed of correspondence with the District Executive Committee and its members. Selected interesting captions taken from the section indexes: General Conference documents 27-36 are reports from 10 different India missionaries on the administrative and financial independence of the congregations. NB there are apparently parallel reports in the volumes of correspondence from Ghana and from China. Mangalore documents about journeys undertaken: Mangalore 56 (Udipi, Kundapur); 60 (the Indian catechist Israel Aaron, English original); 61 (Kudre-Mukh); 77 (Tululand general). Mangalore documents reflecting the life of the Mangalore congregation: Mangalore 57 on the farewell ceremonies for the missionary Brigel; 67 general; 78 work with the poor; 79 the choir in the Shanti church. Mangalore documents reporting on craft work in the congregation: Mangalore 72 & 73 on the erection of a "mechanical workshop"; 76 on "Our craftsmen". Mangalore 63-65 & 83, petition of the congregational elders for the establishment of an English-medium school. Mulki 89-91 & 95: an outstation, Padur. Mulki 96 & 97: school work, the former on the girls’ school in Mulki. Mulki 93: a reply to a letter of the Basel Committee on the learning of Sanskrit. Mulki 95: land and the economic activities of Christians in Utschila, Padur, Kutjar and Santar. Udipi 108: an adolescent from Mysore in the boarding school. Udipi 110-1: the outstation Kattupadi (including a printed and a MS map of the Basel Mission outstations around Udipi). Udipi 112: a visit to a Hindu festival in Hiriadake(?) Udipi 118: the economic situation of the billavas Karkal 125: the experiences of a missionary who acts as a nurse Hermelink wrote a number of reports which look of interest: Karkal 127 about experiences on a preaching journey; Karkal 128 partly "About Bhutan worship and the Jains"; Karkal 129 on the worship of Mariamma. Ananadapoor 147: Kaundinya on the life of a congregational elder, Anandapoor 155 partly a Kaundinya report on the fate of a dying woman. Anandapoor 156 contains a list of mission and church landholdings in Kurg. All five Mercara documents were written by Kittel. Three are about administrative matters, but Mercara 157 is about Kannada proverbs, and Mercara 160 about the Sanskrit literature of the Lingayats. Dharwar 168: a court-case in which T. Costa was involved. Dharwar 169: Costa’s quarterly report on the story of Krishna-baische. Hubli 176: the hindu festival in Yemmanuru, Hubli 182 on the festival in Shirhatti. Hubli 185: short biography of Joseph Chittamadig. [Gadag] Betgeri 198: non-christian support for the mission. [Gadag] Betgeri 200: a journey to the west of the town. Guledgudd 205: a visit to a festival for Balaschankari in Badami
