"Indische Mission XXXII. Canara [&] Südmahratta Distrikt 1865 / [Letters and Reports from the] Indian Mission [volume] 32, Karnataka, 1865."
Description
NB This is the only volume up to 1875 which retains its original binding and label. The discrepancy between the modern serial numbers taken over by the enumeration of C-1 in the 1990s, and already established in 1972, is presumably to be explained by the intrusion into a more narrowly defined series (ONLY letters and reports from South India) of the foreign bodies now registered under C-1.1; C-1.9; C-1.10 and perhaps C-1.19, a volume on economic and practical matters which may have been, at some stage, part of the archive of the Mission Trading Company. See the Introduction to C-1, on pp. 14above. This volume begins with a section devoted to the Executive Committee of the General Conference, with 12 documents. Then follows a section for the "Canara District" (i.e. South Karnataka) with 45 documents, the Mangalore station (90 documents), Mulki (10), Udipi (19), Kurg (10), Südmahratta District Conference (2 documents); Dharwar (23); Hubli (11), Bettigeri (22), Guledgudd (12). Select list of interesting documents judging by the captions in the section indexes: 9 documents in the section of the Executive Committee are devoted to the Regulations for Deacons (= approx. Assistant Pastors) Canara District 21b is a petition from the elders of Mangalore and Mulki for "the introduction of Canaresish in church and school", which is perhaps linked to 22f on the use of Kannada in schools, to two statements by missionaries at Canara District 30 and 31, and to 23e about introducing Kannada in the Tulu area, with comments on this by Hauff and Müller at 40 and 41.. Canara District 23c is about the problem that christians "watch" "heathen" festivals, with statements on this theme by Seb. Furtado and Daniel Aaron at Canara District 32 & 34, and by the missionary Männer at 33. Canara District 23d is about problems in choosing family and baptismal names with a comment by Stolz at 36. Mulki 8 is a Quarterly Report by Männer on the village of Santuru, Udipi 2, 5 and 8 are concerned with mission work in Shirwa Kurg 6 is concerned with rice-growing in Kurg/Kodagu Mark’s Quarterly Reports (Hubli 2, 5 and 9) are all entitled "Indian Pantheism", and two of Huber’s reports are about the history of the mission station (Hubli 6 & 7). Würth’s reports Bettigeri 3 & 9 seem to be part of a long systematic report on Hindu society and religion.
