"Stanger to Basel"
Description
About the teachers' training: Schiedt took boys from noble families who were more interested to go into trade as soon as possible. The students lived in town. Now they live here in the mission house. They all liked to listen to teaching and to learn, but afterwards found teaching dull and therefore started trading. They therefore employ them part time as monitors and let them do odd jobs about the house. This prevents their "institute pride". They must sleep now here in the house. Zimmermann is very zealous at his teaching, but not very good at English, which is a great handicap. All missionaries should stay for three months at London before coming out. About language work: Interpreters useless. He is able to understand Ga and to hold children's services. He has a vocabulary and a collection of simple sentences, some translations of catechism etc., but he wants to be very careful before he publishes anything, the experience with Widmann's booklet is a warning. Mr. Hanson’s translations are very useful, he should be encouraged. But the bible society seems not interested.
