"Stanger to Basel"
Description
Work with the teacher training institutes much reading, retelling and memorizing of biblical stories and passages from the reader. A weekly letter to be written about the news in town etc. Dictations, Geography, Hymn singing. This all taught by him in the morning. In the afternoon a teacher from the school teaches them in writing and calligraphy (?) and arithmetic. The rest of the time they use for private studies. They are industrious but slow, their character is satisfactory. One (the mulatto Peter Mayer) helps him in evening classes. They often go to hold street preaching, beginning with singing. The Mulatto Simon collects the people early in the morning for prayers and especially hymn singing (pp 1-2). About the learning of the Accra language. Stanger’s own method. Thankful the Mathew and John Gospel translation by Rev.Hanson. Chaplain of Cape Coast Castle a talented man from British Accra. A pity that he comes from British Accra. There are many Twi and Fanti words in that dialect. Ussu, Labadi and Teshi speak a purer Ga. But he is thankful for the book. He studies with their teacher who had a good education from an English trader in Accra (pp 2-5). Extract from his diary (pp 5-7). There come invitations from Keta and Ningo (p 8). Printed: Heidenbote 1849. Pp 16b-17a (Reaction to the ten commandments)
