Item Details
Title:
"Stanger from Danish Accra"
Description
Description of his disease and the temptations to desperate during it. Cured by cold baths and bloodletting (pp 1-3). Thankful for medical training received at Basel (p 4). Need that Europeans should settle at Tessing (Teshi) -reasons for this (p 5). About the proposal to get school and chaplaincy from the Government. Some advantages, but disadvantages. Sermons would have to be in English, and the "German English" of new brethren would be despised. English will not become the general language of the people here. The moral state of the Europeans would give great difficulties (pp 6-7). Need for the missionaries to learn Ga (pp 7-8). If it had not been for the Methodists, it would have been better to start in a more humble way and to spend time quietly on a thorough study of the language (p 9). Sickness of teachers, death of 3 Europeans (p 10). Statistics of those knowing English but very few (6 in Christiansborg) (p 11).
