Title:
"Dieterle to Basel"
Description
The work he does is quite different from what he thought. He has nothing to do with the labour of the West Indians and with carpentry. Mr. Mohr is taking good care of this. He found the wood of the sawing machine all rotten and eaten by termites. He is now preparing new wood to reconstruct the machine after a better plan, as they hope. He had to take care of the school for the West Indian children. Bad need for school material (named) (p 1). The chief sent 6 girls to be taught domestic science but not reading and writing. Their future husbands would have to be asked for permission first. Visit of the old chief fetish priest from Abiri (p 2). About a boy Offei and why he was dismissed from school. The joy of the childrentwhen they were presented the toys brought from Europe. A boy from town presented him a pineapple and asked for an English school book; h had none to spare. He came back with the schoolboy Sekjama who was teaching him and his two brothers, since his father did not permit him to attend school. He examined him and found that Sekjama had done a good job. He therefore gave him one of his rare English school books (pp 2-3). One boy who knows English pretty well has attached himself to Dieterle. It is Ashante, the son of Owus Akyem. Dieterle visits people and tries to convince them to send their children. He had some success with this. The Twi book printed needs corrections very badly. Mr. Mohr is making an attempt to burn bricks and tiles with the local clay.
