"Sebald from Akropong"
Description
Parts printed: Heidenbote 1846, pp 37-38: News on school at Akropong. Not printed: It was bitter for him to be put mainly in charge of carpentry while he longed so much to work with children and had been used so often in the school of his father. But God's ways are not their ways (p 1). School, three classes. The children often beg for things, a little piece of paper, an old pen and especially trousers and clothes. He told them that he did not want this begging but would give presents to the best and most industrious in school and on their farms (p 3). Besides the school, which takes 4 hours daily, he works hard at the carpentry teaching the two apprentices and doing all the joining and much of the other work himself. Riis is driving him hard. He wishes he could do more, but he is often so tired. He now understands Halleur although he will not excuse him (p 3f). Long and sad description of differences with Riis over the matter of his treatment of the West Indians. Sebald and Widmann tried to protect Hosford from being beaten by the slave of Riis Aschong. The matter of not enough clothes being given to the West Indians, palaver over corn brought for sale by Clerk. Sarcastic and ironical words of Riis.
