"Sebald from Akropong"
Description
pp 1-5: Account of the ships journey to the Gold Coast. Advisability not to send brethren on boats coming from Bremen since these need half a year to reach the Gold Coast and are not fitted out for passengers. pp 6-7: About the school at Ussu: Thompson is doing well, the children make much progress. There is the need for a European to be stationed there, so that besides the school evangelization and care for the Europeans and Mulattoes can be taken. Thompson has not the time and gifts for it. He has his faults as they all have and should be treated with love and patience, as they must be treated. In the quarrel Riis-Thompson both parties are guilty. On the Halleur affair he cannot say anything. p 7: At Akropong they felt at once at home. But because of political disturbances and the Halleur affair, many things still are very primitive. In the first week they slept in one little room all together, but now each one has a room. There is only one real bed for the newly arrived brethren, no chairs, no writing desk, no cupboard for their clothes. Compare with this the palaces of the Methodists, but also their enormous expenses (£ 15-16.000 a year). He is now very busy making furniture, but the first need is furniture for the chapel. Glad to have two carpenter apprentices of a very good character and disposed to the Gospel, although a little bit slow in work. Desperate need to preach in the surrounding villages.
