Description
a) Letter of Heinze to the brethren, no date, not finished and signed; one page. Short dates of the journey and good advise of the doctor Heinze about behaviour to captains and precautions for sea sickness. b) Page one, bottom till Page 6: A. Riis, 6 June 1832 The above words of Heinze are the last lines written by him. Account of the sickness of the brethren and the death and burial of Heinze (Page 2 and top of Page 3). How Riis and Jäger recover (Page 3). Wonders, what shall happen to the drugs of Heinze. Of the goods of Henke etc. only the books are left. They were in the store of the castle for a long time, they have taken them into their house in Ussu and gradually put them in order. They have now plenty books but not enough of some other things. The Europeans are kind to them, especially during their illness (Page 3). Apart from living in unregular liaisons with Mulatto and Negro women, the white men here are perhaps not worse than in many European towns — he expected worse. Their harsh treatment of the Africans is partly due to the lying and stealing of the latter. Story of how the Africans plundered a stranded Portuguese ship, whose crew could happily be saved from the hand of the Africans and was brought into the fort. Laziness of the Africans. The town is often noisy especially during funeral ceremonies (Page 4). Happy that their house is at the outskirts. Description of the house and domestic arrangements. No cook — main meal taken at Mr. Lutterodt, a merchant, who also buys for them advantageously what they need (Page 5). They have had the firm intention to go to the plantations soon after Eastern. But their disease and the death of Heinze changed this. They have not yet given up the plan, but wonder, whether it is wise to leave medical care so far away. Mr. Lutterodt has offered them a house in a plantation there. They try it for a period of some weeks. c) P.P. Jäger 20 June 1832: On Pages 7 and 8 Greetings. Wishes to be in the Mission house at Basel, whose happy atmosphere he only now fully realizes in an atmosphere which is spiritually unhealthy and as if it was poisoned. But when it will be God's hour, he will scatter the darknese of Africa by the light of his grace and glory.
