"Strömberg to Basel"

Discussing finance, comes to the problem of paying the debts of employees. Cases offered as occurring recently in Kibi: - A servant of Strömberg's who to employ he had to pay 5 dollars, and shortly after Strömberg was presented with the alternative of paying a further 20 dollar debt or seeing the man pawned. - 20 dollars had to be paid for a debt of the mason who assisted in the building of the second Kibi mission house. So argues that it is impossible to take on wage labour without first paying the debts of the people involved.It appears that inter al he had received instructions from Basel not to pay peoples' debts (this letter is a reply to one from Basel dated 14th March 1863).
