One of the points at stake in the negotiations with Asante was whether Asante might take up some other power's protection - he had just heard that an agreemant had been concluded restricting Asante to the British sphere of influence. He had also heard that the British had agreed to sell the Asantehene 30 tons of powder - he could not understand this, since Agogo, Nkoranza etc. were not being taken under British protectorate and it was clear the Asantehene wanted to get back the lost provinces.
