"Süss' Annual Report of the Station Gyadam"
Description
Discussing the political situation in the Area Süss suggests that on the while it would be true to say that the subjects of Kotoku in the Gyadam area (the Northern division of the state) have broken away from the rule of Kibi - though he also repeats the material about the tribe having come from the inner parts of Ashanti about 30 years ago. He repeats too that Agyeman is troubled about the distance separating the two parts of his kingdom and remembers the day when all men under arms lived less than one day’s march from his capital. Süss says of the 1857 incident between the two kingdoms that the people were one day’s march into Abuakwa over some dispute, and the day was only saved from war by one of the Abuakwa princes swearing an oath to get the dispute cleared up within 10 days. Station personnel include two catechists, Adolph Burckhardt, and Christian Asante. Süss and Haas (newly arrived from Akropong) both have wives on the station. Currently there are 12 catechumens, mostly from Gyadam; of the four baptised earlier one is now in Christiansborg, two live on the mission station, and one, the Gyadamer baptised Asemode is living in the town - he is a rather weak-willed person and does not get much peace. The two catechists are to take up work one on the station as schoolteacher, the other in the town (duties unspecified).
