"General Conference Report"

The first topic discussed was the opinion of the conference on the question posed by the comitee in Basel should Aburi be opened as a station for European Missionaries, or should another station be contemplated at one day’s journey (from Akropong or the coast not specified). Opposition to Aburi being reopened: and the opinion of the meeting evidently swung towards opening a station in Akim, in a spite of the costs involved. No very strong opinion was voiced in favour of either Kibi or Gyadam. but opinion seems to heve been fairly unanimously in favour of Kibi. Süss saying cannot make up his mind. Ln Widmann’s summing up one or two new points emerge. In Kibi he and Mader had been shown land on which they could settle which had earlier belonged to an Ashanti prince Kamene Boateng. Widmann describes him as having been driven out of Asante not very long ago; on his death the Asantehene asked that his people should be sent back to him. (There is also in this conference minute a one page discussion of the need for more horses for the Ga area mission). (And a discussion of further developing the Accra Plains work carried on apparently independently of the Akim question, and mainly consisting of a discussion of the strength of the staff at Christiansborg).
