"Extracts from Stanger’s Diary"
Description
Large parts printed: Heidenbote 1849, pp 47-49. Entries for 29th-30th March include descriptions of the Plantation area on the Accra plains, where he had a short rest-stay. Actually staying at the Lutterodt plantation - by the house a small laid out garden with plenty of shade cover, including a bower, Oranges, lemons, coffee trees among which the slaves werte cutting the grass. Exchanged visits with a Mr. Buchhalter, who was staying on the Royal (königlichen) plantation, Large quantities of grass being collected for roofing, this an important source of supply for Accra. On the Mission plantation the coffee is doing well though the people (sic) are not looking after it well. The orange and lime trees are full of fruit, The Mission plantation is approx.in the middle of the other Accra plains plantations, and he discusses the provision of a school there from this angle. It would be good in that in return for their work on the plantation the scholars could be fed. On the other hand, it could not expect to recruit very successfully from the plantation villages. These he describes as often being of only 6-8 families lie from 10 minutes to ½ hour apart. With the frequent rains which you get at the foot of the hills, and the dangerous wild animals, it is unlikely that parents would want their children to go so far alone. Moreover people tend not to live there for long. Not only free people, but slaves, like to gravitate back to the coast villages where the big business in rice and yams (sic) growing goes on.
